    Can't post

You do not have permission to access this page. This could be due to one of several reasons:
You do not have permission to access the page that you were trying to. Are you trying to edit someone else's post or trying to access administrative features? Check that you are allowed to perform this action in the Forum Rules.

I think normal users can't post new threads in the downtime forum. If your server is down, you post it on the General Support, when the problem is confirmed, a mod will move the thread to the downtime forum.

I cannot confirm this because I think I'm in the mod groups, and I have permissions to post a new thread there... But not sure.

You may check your permissions in the forum rules, at the bottom of the page...

    You may post new threads
    You may post replies
    You may post attachments
    You may edit your posts

If you see You may not post new threads, then what I told you is confirmed

You may not post new threads
    You may post replies
    You may post attachments
You may edit your posts HTML code is OFF
    vB code is ON
    Smilies are ON
    [IMG] code is OFF

I really have no idea why, especially since I see that members with less than 10-20 posts have posted there. What use is a critical downtime forum if you have to be "admitted" to it from another?

    Silly,

It is my understanding that what Julian told you is correct... In order to have your issues moved into the downtime forum, you must first post the issue in general support... Once the downtime is confirmed, the mods are then able to transfer your thread to that section of this board.

Users such as you and I can only post to those topics which are already listed, and can not add new threads.

But what happens if I want to report a downtime that occured earlier in the day (as it does every day at 3-7pm on Stingray) ?

I still see this new forum as a useless "powertrip" issue!

Let's free it up to the members, shall we?

I don't view this as a powertrip issue, this assures that downtimes posted in the downtime forum are actually downtimes.

We don't really have to personally verify it. If it happens and you can show a ping or some effort of looking at the problem it will most likely be moved. If you just say "Site's down!" then we have to verify it...

How about 12 emails a day (honest, no sarcasm here) saying my site is down due to a "MySQL error due to socket... #2002", because the loads are over 20? Please don't take me for a fool Dogma. I know what is what, so if I post a "site down" post, then that means that my patience has run dry. I am a patient person, but when you try to impede my ability to communicate my troubles, you really do test my patience.

I was just looking for help in posting here, not some High-Almighty "you are who you are" reply!

The idea behind this concept, was to do the following:
    1. Provide a place for users to check for actual downtimes. There were instances in the past, where threads entitled "downtime" were not actually downtime.
    2. Gather all information into one location. Previously, users would post multiple threads about the same server being down. This causes confusion for everyone as people need to read 3 threads to find 1 truth. Because all the "down" threads are in the Downtimes forum, users do not have to go hunting.

I understand that your patience wears and you say "downtime", which to the user is inaccessibility to a site. However, one must look at the actual proper definition of the term. The term, literally, means the site is down, unreachable because the machine has failed in someway. The following do not qualify as downtime:
    • Bandwidth Excedement. This is what it is, not downtime. Yes, your site is inaccessible, but it is not "downtime".
    • Issues with routing or IP: Yes, this creates problems for you and you and or others may not be able to access a given site. However, that given site is actually online. Therefore, it is not "down"

One of the key essential properties of downtime is inaccessbility to all, not to a few.

SillyAlien, this is not a "powertrip". This is designed to help users and the community as a whole get accurate information. We added a forum moderator, jkeller, so that more mods would frequent the boards and move threads to "Downtime Issues" if necessary. We are all in different time zones, I believe, and this is advantageous to the idea.

If you create a thread in general support, regarding what you perceive as "downtime", it will not be ignored. However, please do take care in properly defining the issues at hand.

    Thank you.

Fine. As of tonight I will forward you all the MySQL errors that I receive when my site is down. Deal? Still take me for an idiot?

I never took you for an idiot. When people are angry and/or frustrated, they will often false definte conditions. I have done so myself in this hosting world - not with Aletia though.

Please understand that we are not taking you for an idiot. We are merely defining the lines. And I was just explaining to you this concept that was developed, its reasons and purposes.

I replied to your thread in the support forum. We are willing to help you in any way that we can, but realize that we have limited capabilities to do so.

Yes you did indeed. I wish you hadn't! You make me out to be an illiterate idiot. I hope you drop your attitude Julie and see knowing people for who they are. You are definitely NOT helping Aletia solve Stingray problems here. I have an associate BEGGING to solve the "script-junkie" problem on Stingray, but am keeping him at bay. If this keeps up, I'll contact Aletia directly with the solution, which my associate already has. Please know your role!

I'm sorry, I think you misunderstood my message.

What I was attempting to say is that a lot of people post downtime when they have routing or other issues and it's not Aletia's fault. This is why the downtime forum isn't open, to prevent this people from posting false downtimes. We need to varify people's claims before we move them into the downtime forum.

Often though the server comes back up before we can verify, hence part of your frustration.

What I was attempting to suggest that if users (I wasn't talking about you at all) showed some attempt to confirm that their site was down, then we could move it right away to the downtime forum, even if the server is back up.

I was in no way trying to insult or debase you. The system is ment to protect against the less knowledgeable, not you.

I really think you missed my point.

I was trying to explain how most users would abuse the downtime forum, you would never be one of those. Unfortunately, because of those abusers, we can't have an open forum.

If you have any suggestions of how we could improve how that forum works, I would love to hear them as the current set up works, but not well. As clio said "I never took you for an idiot." I know you to be a very learned person.

I report less than one tenth of one percent of my downtimes, Julie. When I do report them, I never falsify the information/conditions. Unless you witness someone doing something like that, please do not use that even as a general statement in your replies. Makes for bad diplomacy.

I do not understand why you are so hostile! People are just trying to help you!

Look closely at what I said. I said they do that if they are angry and it is unintentional.

Whatever, I have no energy to respond to you and your hostile comments. I have better things to do with my time. I devote much of my time to helping people, and you are one of the most ungrateful and un-undestanding person I have encountered.

As I wrote you in my reply to your email, 20 emails from vBulletin is nothing. I get 200.
