I heard it's amazing! Do you think it would be worth upgrading from 6?

I just watched the online demo. That is really cool. I was a stamp addict for a bit there ("cured" by no longer having Photoshop).

Collegestores rock. The president of the Harvard Cooperative Society gives students of my school 75% discount on software (that's the equivilent of student discount for college studenst). And lucky for us, we're smack in the middle of the Harvard Medical School Longwood Campus.

But better than that, I'm under a site license at work to get Photoshop and Dreamweaver. No need to buy anything

I have Photoshop 6 on my computer and I think the last time I used it was about a year ago.

The learning curve for Photoshop is really high - wonder where you guys find the time to achieve any kind of expertise with it -

I have found that I have been able to accomplish all that I needed with Jasc Paintshop Pro v7.02 which at the time came bundled with Animationshop 3. It's cost is about one fourth of or less of Paintshop and although I believe I have become reasonably taleneted using it, I have probably only touched on less then half it's capabilities. With the eyecandy 4000 and xenoflex 1.1 plugins the program is amazing in what one can do.

Personally I just found Paintshop much more user friendly and intuitive then Photoshop. I imagine that Photoshop has abilities that go beyond Paintshops especially for the professional graphic artist, I have yet to find them though.

Paintshop though can be somewhat buggy when it comes to dealing with transparent backgrounds. On those rare occasions I just export the work into animationshop3 and with a couple of clicks I have my transparent background and then back to Paintshop for any remaining work. Paintshop has excellent optimization wizards for jpg, gif and png formats also.

Therefore if one is on a budget or relatively new at using graphics programs and doesn't have the time for an extensive learning curve - I think Paintshop Pro v7.02 is an excellent choice.

Anybody else here have experience with both??

I don't have experience with both, but I wanted to add that PSP is higly recommended by many people that I know.

It's kinda like Photoshop, and Mini-photoshop.

For those who are considering purchasing Photoshop or spending on an upgrade I would suggest that they go to:

JASC SOFTWARE FREE 30DAY FULLY FUNCTIONAL TRIAL VERSIONS

However if you don't have broadband you might want to consider either trying the dl late night or early morning while your sleeping. Paintshop Pro is about 30mb and Animationshop about 11mb + they have some other excellent programs all of which are FULLY FUNCTIONAL for 30 days.

The cost of Paintshop Pro is $99 for the dl or $109 for the boxed version. In addition they have a rebate offer that if you own any competitive software (Photoshop) you can send in proof of purchase and receive a $30 rebate. Even without the rebate the price is far less then the Adobe program and for the average user is probably as functional as Photoshop.

I LOVE MY CABLE MODEM 30MB = a couple of minutes
when I tried that with my 56k tel modem HOURS!!

If you download the program don't forget to check out and dl the free plugin additions - especially picture frames and picture tubes.

Yeah, PSP is great for the everyday needs of people (nuance between that and "basic" needs).

Photoshop was what we had to use at the ad agency, so I had to learn (there's the answer to your learning curve question, EHG). The real designers used it, so the rest of us did as well. But after I learned it, I got to love it -- quirks and all.

I should mention that I was almost 100% on a Mac at the time, so that played an important role. PSP didn't have anywhere near the power it does now (this was back in 1997-99) and it's still not available for the Mac. Besides, even on the PC I prefer Photoshop's keyboard shortcuts and menus.

The irony is, I mostly use it for Web things -- PSP's speicalty.

I would imagine that having to learn it if one expected to get his next paycheck would be motivation enough. Obviously the learning curve varies tremendously on any program depending on the users abilities. How long did you say it took you to (master??) photoshop?

It is an excellent program I conceed - but I believe that PSP is more then capable of meeting the demands of of almost anyone using a graphics program for web design unless they are cluttering up their pages with flashy flash as so many do nowdays -

PSP is just much more user friendly and intuitive then Photoshop and for many price is a significant factor.

97-99 comparatively thats eons ago in software development - Have you tried PSP 7 ?

Actually I guess if I had already put in the #### of hours necessary to accomplish the learning curve of Photoshop I wouldn't bother with PSP either, which brings us to Animationshop3 great little program, virtually every animation on my site and elsewhere has been created using it - quick - easy - not particularly sophisticated but if I need that I just create a frame in another program open it in Animationshop3 and finish off the gif there.

By the way anyone looking for an excellent 3d program for text, banners, etc etc XARA 3d is a really easy to use program which can produce some very sophisticated output - I have ULEAD3D and some others that are far more sophisticated and DIFFICULT but XARA is my fav.

You can check it out and even dl a trial version here:
