They have contacted the makers of CPanel about it, so soon hopefully

Now that's something that I've seen brought up often. How much is controlled by CPanel updates, and how much by the host? I always thought it interesting/curious that core services (at least "core" as far as a host's business model) were updated by a third party.

    Any insights, Sean?

Ah, doesn't seem to be a third party thing after all: [raven] PHP 4.2.1.

But there still seem to be elements upgraded or maintained by CPanel. Would you be willing to illuminate us, sean -- or point us in the right direction? I'm curious that way, and I figure others may be as well.

That's all I've been told sorry. I agree with you, odd that a 3rd party would have complete control over this, but that's what they told me!

The following is all speculation, not fact:

I don't think the makers of CPanel or any other third pary has control over any updates. I think the confusion arises because CPanel distribute the latest versions of various software along with their own software. That presumably makes it quicker and easier to install, so aletia might prefer to make their updates this way rather than install each piece of software as and when a new version is released.

This certainly doesn't prohibit aletia from making the upgrades themselves, as it appears they are currently doing with PHP on various servers at the moment.

That makes sense. I'm not sure about the amount of control that Aletia has over some things, since there was a case (or two) where an unwanted update via a CPanel update caused service outages. I'll cross my fingers that Aletia's going to start leaning more towards the manual method, for sake of their having the final word at least.

I just opened a support ticket and got a response in just over an hour. The ticket system is improving! Here is what they said:

    Hi,
We have contacted the department concerned and they will be doing the required updation very soon.

    Thank You.
    Regards,
    Geo.

    I agree!

My ticket load is lower than I've had in quite some time!

That means we can start focusing on upgrades a bit more (assuming we don't get another flood :-)
