MOVING POSTS - DISCUSSIONS vs TECH QUESTIONS

I am not challenging the authority of the moderators to make that call as I realize the necessity for it and I also realize that there are often occasions when it is appropriate to relocate a post.

I can even understand why the call was made to move my post on bulletin board software to the 'building my site - php and mysql' or whatever it is called. I understand but for numerous reasons I think in this case it was not appropriate.

My post was requesting general info on bb programs and hopefully a discussion on the various preferences of those that respond - It did not contain technical questions to solve a particular problem, if it did then I would concur that it would be appropriate to have it in the forum it was moved too.

Particular technical questions was neither the intent of my post nor the content. I was seeking an informative discussion (chit chat) about the various available bb programs and had hoped to get a bit of a discussion going as to the pro's and con's of various offerings.

THAT MAY OR MAY NOT HAVE HAPPENED - If such an ongoing discussion were to happen just like our previous discussions on various processors, computers and the like, it would have happened here NOT WHERE THE POST WAS TRANSFERRED TOO - LINK OR NOT.

I BELIEVE THE POST WAS APPROPRIATE FOR THIS FORUM, I was aware of the other possibilities when I posted.

In the meantime I do want to again thank those that responded. Your information has been very useful and we are both looking at the +/- of the various offerings.

I had hoped to talk about it more here and perhaps gain a bit more knowledge - apparently that is not going to happen in this forum. The next time we want to just BS about this or that we should make sure that there is no other slot here on the board that someone might think is more appropriate. - i.e. If we want to have a general discussion on web site building then we ought to stick it into one of the web site slots below and not clutter up our chit chat board!

To the moderator who moved the post, I have explained why I felt the post should be here, If you still feel it is not appropriate to have it in the (CHIT CHAT FORUM ANYTHING GOES, MAKES FRIENDS, JUST CHAT) WELL I CONCEDE IT'S YOUR CALL.

not just tech things go there. if it fits into a category, it goes there. if it doesn't, it doesn't go anywhere. since we don't have a hardware category, hardware stuff can stay here.

Well, taking your problem and posting another thread about it isn't getting you anywhere. What you should have done was PMed a mod your thoughts.

Like I said CLIO it's your call. I still believe that when it comes to this particular forum which is GENERAL CHIT CHAT, a certain amount of leeway should be given.

If you look in the BUILDING YOUR SITE, php & mysql and view the various threads almost all are about specific issues or tech questions about php or mysql that are effecting the users sites - they are how to do this or that, correct this or that and mostly specific technical questions and of course answers by the many helpful people on the Aletia forums.

My post was not meant to be that perhaps the way I worded it is why you interpreted it that way.

Those that took the time to repond and I appreciate yours also (thank you) for the most part understood that I was was looking for the pro's and con's of bb software and the individualized experiences that others have had with the various programs available. I was in addition since these bb programs are numerous and complex to get a discussion going on the trade offs of one vs the other etc. and obtain as much as possible the experiences that anyone wished to share on the subject of bb software.

I concur if a newbi or even a regular user puts up a post here such as:

duh! I just loaded my whole site into the public ftp "in" folder and my site doesn't come up did I do something wrong?

Most likely someone here would be more then happy to correct his obvious errors which would take less then a minute but in a case like this I concur the message should be moved down to the site building stuff.

It all makes perfect sense to me but what can I say I'm just a duck! Being only Duck I admit I'm a tad annoyed not particularly cause of this one post it's because now I have this feeling that I can't talk about what I want to in what I though was a GENERALIZED chit chat forum.

Obviously one of us misinterpeted the purpose of this forum and since you as a moderator (VERY UNDER PAID DEAR) are here to ensure that basic rules are not violated and to try and keep the forums as smooth running as possible then I guess it was me.

Therefore I have no choice but to accept the fact that this generalized forum, one which I though was open to any kind of discussion as long it didn't violate the bd rules is no longer that and perhaps I was wrong to ever believe that was the intent when it was created. OH WELL!!

Oh I agree with you clio I don't see why this or anything else shouldn't be able to be discussed as long it is done with mutual respect and without any argumentative behavior of a personal nature. (EXCEPT SOFTWARE - NOT HERE!!)

Justin I do not believe the end result of my post would differ whether I communicated my thoughts on the subject matter at hand publically or in private.

I have been here long enough that to realize that Julie is not inflexible. As a matter of fact I think it was 836 posts ago she admitted error and corrected the situation. j/k clio really a bit of DUCK HUMOR

I have no doubt that she will use her very capable mind to read and annalyse my position and make an objective decision. I believe she did just that after reading my prior post in this thread and still felt her decision was appropriate - Obviously with this post I'm hoping to convince her otherwise. If not....

help is not defined entirely as troubleshooting. help can also just be questions. asking for advice or opinions on software constitutes as "help" if you ask me. i mean, i ask for people's "help" in picking out new equipment and stuff.

yeah, i've been sour dough lately. stupid school pissing me off. i'm still stuck in a horrible course. oh well. early action in the fall and after winter, i'll be that annoying person who never stops smiling.

Well the way I look at it is MOST LIKELY the sun will rise tomorrow (unless mankind does something incredibly stupid) and in the overall picture of things this thead has less significance then comparing the smallest grain of sand at the bottom of the ocean to the COSMOS - actually substantially less.

Now if I could just figure out how to bribe your teachers into doubling your homework for the next month !!

Just think Julie if you listen to most of the adults around here and in r/l most likely including your parents they are going to REPEATEDLY tell you how these your school years are the best years - as they all look back fondly on their youth!!

Don't believe them - they just forgot all the bad stuff, the head hassles, the peer pressure, the craming for tests, the days of the quezy stomach wondering what your results were for tests, midterms, finals, the class! Not to mention the horrible trials and tribulations of finally almost maybe kinda sorta making it through puberty!!

As we get older though it's nice to look back and just remember the good times

Therefore since in our society education is offered to our youth literally on a silver platter - it's there for the taking - just do your best and beyond that NOT WORTH A STOMACH ACHE - cause in future years you will only remember the good parts - and the chances are 90% that whatever subject you are disgusted with will be a subject that you havn't used since Boston Latin (Academy?).

If it was a subject you enjoyed you would excell in it - it is not and you probably won't and therefore chances are very very slim that you will engage as an adult in any career that demands said disgusting subject.!!

What happened to summer vacation?? Are you year round? summer school?

That #$%&*^ course that you can't stand - its probably not the subject matter that is at fault - that is just information - IT'S THE TEACHER WHO IS PRESENTING IT -although quite often those with very high intelligence who usually excell at anything they want to find that in a particular area - they just can't grasp a particular subject that others they know who have the iq slightly above a mentally challenged amoeba are excelling in it - The human mind ain't (I like that word) it a trip!!

You will note from grammatical structure in my threads that I did not excell in HS English but in Eng comp and lit in College always 4.0.

Dumb teachers what the heck do they mean I can't have a 1000 word sentence - SURE CAN I'M A DUCK!!


p.s. help = troubleshooting / questions ........and at what point do questions become a discussion??

thanks for the kind words EHG.

unfortunately, it's not just the material and the teacher. it's the entire system. the whole goddamn political system that is my school. i've been juggled and tossed around from administrator to administrator. from teacher to department head and back and forth and back and forth.

in other words, i'm fighting a battle i'm likely to lose. but i refuse to give up. it's a matter of principles and that's one thing that i will NOT let die.

remember the good things? heh, i don't remember an ounce of spanish!

yes, the sun will rise tomorrow and it'll be 90 degrees again in boston, heh. anyway, i look foward to christmas and after that point i'll be the annoying girl who never stops smiling. (assuming i get in tho =/ )
