Hi,
Can anyone tell me how IRC works. I never used it but I would like to have it on my site. Does JPC need some special software and anyone know and good programs to use it at?
Thank You,
Paul

All I know is JPC does not allow IRC, even placing it on your site, I think.
We do not allow IRC any or any IRC based programs. They will get your site suspended so please do not use them. IRC is well know for being resource hogs and leaving themselves open for DoS attacks. IRC is also used to run some nasty programs as well as chat programs and often people try to hide them in the background so we won't find them.... but we do.

Is there any other way to have a chat program on our site. I would prefer a Java based one and not one that reloads a page every few seconds.
Thank You,
Paul

Chatrooms aren't allowed on JaguarPC either![]()
Hosting accounts include a java and refreshing chatroom, its in cpanel, those are the only ones you may use.
I was allowed to run an IRC chat server for a client on Palmversa and still have it.
I was allowed to use it because it does not have the capability
to send or receive files.
It also is said to be the most secure.
Isnt a little silly to pay for a service and then be restricted in what you can do? I understand not allowing copyrighted items on
a site since this is against the law, but to not allow completely safe and legal items?
What am I supposed to do now with the client's IRC?
I think Palmversa was wrong in not allowing it, and I think JaguarPC needs to work something out to setup some type
of REAL chatroom. Maybe set one server up and providing a Javascript to link into it.
But these "refresh" chatrooms are completely useless.
It is like asking people to use dos instead of windows.
Please come up with a sollution.

Michael,
When you signed up with JaguarPC, you should have been aware of their Acceptable Use Policy (AUP). If you have a web site through JPC, then you agreed to the AUP. Complaining now about its limitations will get you no-where.
I have never seen a chat/IRC server on a web site that was actually useful. A forum system like this is much better. If you really want to run a chat room, then coordinate it at specific times, and create an IRC chatroom on a publically available server, or use ICQ's chatroom functionality.
I'm sorry if you're disappointed about the lack of IRC on JPC servers, but if you had read the AUP when you signed up, you would have known about it.
Why not use a service like Raidersofts Freechat.
You can embed it on your page, but the actual hosting of the chat engine and client is on the raidersoft site.
I think the URL is http://www.raidersoft.com
take a look - they also have free Java chat as well as paid for hosting.
Just a thought.
Better or not better (I personally don't want IRC software running on my server, but that's not the point), your argument does not take into account the fact that he (and many others of us) did NOT "sign up" with Jaguar PC. We were bought by them from Palmversa. The email I recieved said, in effect, that all the goodies we had there we will also have here.Originally posted by pahowes

BTW, if you want to have full IRC capability, just go to www.quickchat.org and you can get a channel, with access either through a standard irc client, or use the java code you can generate on their site.
I don't think anyone should expect having an IRC server on a shared account. IRC server are just open invitations to DoS attacks, and also, even the big IRCd packages have new security holes being released quickly which jeapordise the entire server.
However, there are many IRC servers out there, running, which you could use with the help of a java client. Using a Free Java client like Eteria, http://eirc.sourceforge.net/ and pointing it at an IRC Server to a specific channel you can freely have live chat on your site.![]()

Whilst were having a chat about chat....does anybody know of a simple script (not IRC) that I can use on a clients web site that works like ICQ but for web sites..... My clients web site has a membership and he has asked me if we can set up an instant chat service between members online, a sort of one to one basis or leave a messages if one of the members is not online.......I have checked at hotscripts and cgi-resources but no luck... any help with this!!!!
As I said, I WAS a Palmversa customer.
I NEVER signed up with JaguarPC.
My client's IRC IS usefull and I think there should not be any other person making decision like "I have never seen one that was useful " therefore YOU dont need one. That STEAMS me.
It is NOT unreasonable to ask for IRC support.
Many people have uses for chat rooms. Ever see a support center with live support chat?!!
My client uses the chat to open one request to discuss religious topics.
I also dont get "IRC is dangerous"! LOL
IRC is no more dangerous than FTP.
Especially one that doesnt have file transfer support.

Sorry Michael but IRC is one thing we can not and will not be able to support. Its even prohobited by our NOC (Dialtone) on their network, they've had numerous problems with DoS attacks being launched against IRC sites.

Check out http://www.phplivesupport.com/. It's more geared for "Online Support".
It's $89.95 tho. But it allows you to chat online with a visitor, or allow a visitor to request a chat, and if offline, leave a message.
