Would you like to have the servers named by clients instead of "host #" ?
If yes, please post your suggestion for the theme such as name them after animals, geography, science, astronomy, greek mythology, anything at all you want to suggest.

I think you should keep along the lines of the animal theme
there are heaps of animals out there .. but just stay away from the sloth! (Very slong cumbersome animal)
I love my stingray machine
Heres a list of some animals (Some are prolly already in use)
Dolphine (Gracefull, Intelifent, Fast)
Tiger (Gracefull, Inteligent, attractive, fast)
Penguin (Cute and small, but well capible on making its on)
Polar Bear (Large and Powerful, but really quite cuddly)
Koala (Cute and nice to look at, but smells like all hell)
Platapuse (Cute shy, but quick and numble)
Kangaroo (Large, powerful, gentle yet firm)
Emu (Huge and ugly but strong and fast)
Star fish (Small and cute but never falls over)
There you even got my own assosiations with the animls!
All opinions are the result of being uninformed, unintelligent and uninterested!
i'd name my server according to elements, cause i'm a geek like that. oxygen, hydrogen, helium, nitrogen.... again i'm a geek like that...

I was thinking something related to sceince, be it atomic breakdowns (atom, ion, etc) or astrological events/names (nebula, galaxy, etc).

Nomsane?
That is all.
How about naming the servers after users who suggest things like naming servers... like maybe..... Ron!?!?!?!
http://www.aletiaforums.com/showthre...8071#post38071
LOL
Or how about after pioneers of the internet?
Kleinrock
Vannevar Bush
Englebart
Gore (Ok, just kidding...)
How about after highways?
US1
US2

US66
I guess that does kinda defeat the purpose...
Maybe after movie/tv stars, characters, products and/or movies?
BruceWillis (dies hard?)
WhatchYaTalkinBoutWillis (small machine, big pipe)
DirtyHarry (with a .44GHz front-side bus)
SorryDave (HAL from 2001)
Viagra (ahhhhh hmmmmm.... Always --er, ah-- online?)
How about after defunct (or soon to be) computer hardware companies?
DEC
HP
PRIME
TANDEM
TRS-80

Yeah, as a longtime geek I also like clio's suggestion. Elements are pretty cool, and many are even familiar to non-geeks. I also like the animal names, or even country or city names (I want to be on "France" or "Paris"!).Originally posted by Jag
Hello fellow geek, must be why I like your idea so much. I was thinking something related to sceince, be it atomic breakdowns (atom, ion, etc) or astrological events/names (nebula, galaxy, etc).
I don't know about atomic/quantum breakdowns, since there wouldn't be too many whose context would be familiar. "Neon" is in the periodic table even if it's associated with glowing tubes, but "charm" sounds a bit like Teen magazine named the server. Also, I don't think I'd like to be on "Nova" -- it's either an explosion or "no va" ("no go").
Oh, another plus for names: less easy for script kiddiez. The phone company long ago moved away from sequential area codes for that same reason. If there's a "host25", there's a good chance that there are around 24 other hosts that follow the same nomenclature.
Jsut food for thought.
