    I need an SLR camera

Hey, any photography buffs out there? I want to buy a new camera for my photography camera. I only own a point and shoot. I have an SLR from the 80s (well it's my dad's) but the shutter is broken and probably not worth replacing.

Anyway, I need a camera! Julie is broke though. She's going to Washington DC twice next year and to Europe next year too, and college too! So my budget is around $200. I would prefer to keep it under $200.

I'm looking at the following Cameras. Let me know what you think of each:

    1. Canon ae-1: It's heavy though, but durable and a student like me is sure to have it banging around. It's not available anymore in stores though so I'll probably have to buy it on ebay.
    2. Canon EOS Rebel 2000 Silver Date 35mm SLR: Found this on Amazon. Heard of it? Sound good?
    3. Pentax K1000: I borrowed one from school. I'm gonna try it out over the weekend to see how I like it. =)
    4. Nikon N65: Um, I think Dogma recommended this one to me?

Yeah, so that's my list so far. Anything I buy has to have the ability to MANUAL everything because this is a class and the point is to learn how to do stuff instead of auto everything like my stupid point and shoot camera.

Anyway, any help would be greatly appreciated. =)

    I LOVE taking pictures!

Never put a cammera in my hand.. I'll take a picture of everything and then i'll take another picture of it! hahaha

Personally i would go with the Nikon simply because from my own experice they are the best maker of cammeras ... How ever .. to get the real good ones you still have to pay a lot for them!

Canon make good cammeras i have one of them too.. altho its now an older model but i couldn't bare to give it up its the only one with a hugely powerful lense and i like the way a lot of the controls work!

That one tho.. personally i wouldn't get it.. i just don't like the look of it.. thats about the only none likeable thing about it!

Have you considered digital? At least then you won't spend any money on films and processing And seeing you're so into computers as well...

A good review site for digital camera's is http://www.dpreview.com/ , but I'm sure there are ones for analog camera's as well. Then make up your mind from there. You will be able to do quite accurate price/performance comparisons, and read up on user's comments.

I just love the possibility of taking a lot of pictures and then selecting the best to keep. You (almost) never have to worry about how many shots are left with todays memory sizes...

(If you come over to Europe, make sure you have the proper power conversion tools if needed)

    Have you considered second hand?

Then again, there might notbe a camera exchange anywhee near you, but IMHO you're more likely to get a used bargain - and get some useful advice there than anywhere else...

I ended up buying a used Canon AE-1 Program from this former marine and i LOVE it. =) It hasn't come yet, but I loved the history of it. It's been on like every continent except Antarctica and i just LOVE it!

The house we recently bought, used to be home to a man that also had photographing as a hobby. It the attic we have a little darkroom where he developed his own photo's

We don't use it as such ourselves (having a digital camera and all) but since we don't need the space right now we will leave it there for the time being.

History is nice, as long as they don't start throwing dates at you

And a welcome one, at that. Glad you're back (this is technically my second note, since I "saw" you on this thread first).

The broken camera wouldn't have anything to do with the election results?

I've got a very old K-1000. I got it as a "hand-me-down" (with some nice filters and stuff, too) when my aunt bought a new camera when I was a teen. I mostly do digital now, but I still like using film for that "traditional" look and feel to pictures. The K-1000 doesn't do anything for you, you hae to set everything yourself, but that of course gives you all of the control over how your pics will come out.

A friend of mine in college was a photo student and she'd keep steeling the camera from me because she liked taking pictures with it so much.

I don't know anything about the other cameras you mentioned, so I can't compare them, but I know the K-1000 is a good one. It doesn't look like they still make it, though (I didn't see it on their website), but I'm sure you could get a good deal on a used one somewhere.

Seriously, Barrett was such a great guy and would have made a great governor. Too bad the people of Wisconsin are stupid (well, some of them)...

Well, Minnesota went 100% conservative, and it's got a history of being much more liberal in general. Liberal doesn't automatically = good, but the governor-elect and Norm Coleman are both true slime.

    Hey!

the voters of massachusetts are dumb too! and so are our officials

I liked the K1000. I understand how to read the light meter. I don't know how to use the light meter on my AE1 still.

I'm looking to buy a new digital camera, but I also want a film one where I have total control. And I love my AE-1.

I found the PERFECT one. I got it from a marine and it's been on EVERY continent except Antarctica. It's PERFECT. I'm going to bring it with me to Europe next year. I also got all these filters and thingies, but I don't know how to use them yet, heh. I've taken some pictures and developed them in the dark room at school. They kick ass! I LOVE photography

I have 3 SLR cameras sitting on my desk. heh, my mom thinks I stole them all....

    Ebay!
