Please notify your customers of server changes!

How hard could it be to send an email to affected customers when you move them to another server? The control panel even asks for an email address for machine- specific announcements.

Since I have to use the server name for mailman lists, it is important to know what server I am on. It is bad to not know about such changes until a customer sends an email alerting me of the broken link.

Related info about mailman and server name:

An email was sent out concerning the upcoming moves, although Jaguar's mailing list was incomplete (culled from incomplete Aletia records, apparently). It was sent long before the actual moves, which was probably a mistake in hindsight. I don't believe Jaguar expected the schedule to drag out as long as it did. An alert one the day before and day after a move would have been better of course. Jaguar did put up a few announcements in the forums concerning the moves, as well as a Houston move page, which was updated periodically.

I'm not saying this applies to you, but there's a definite tendency for some to ignore alerts no matter when or how many are given. I'll bet there's still some out there who haven't realized they've been moved, and are maybe seeing various problems as a result. I agree with the basic point of your message, in suggesting that a few more timely email alerts would be good.

The only email I've ever received from Jaguar was the Aletia Newsletter about JaguarPC acquiring Aletia Hosting, dated August 16, 2002.

This is very insufficient. How many customers visit the forums? I haven't had the time to frequent the forums any more. I came here only to rant, and got the idea to look for any info regarding the change.

I first became aware of server changes last week when attempting to upload. WS_FTP showed the files as being uploaded, but I could not access the files with a browser and got 404's. The forums were down, and I read something somewhere through Aletia support about server changes. Shortly afterwards a client complained to me about not being able to download his email.

There was another one, a couple of weeks later, that mentions upcoming moves of some accounts on troubled servers (briefly). Don't think there was anything about the moves except in the forums after that, which I believe is where the server move page that I mentioned earlier was announced. Not arguing with you, a more timely email alert would have been welcome.

I hear you. Unfortunately the forums are often the only way of keeping abreast of things around here. Even in that, the announcement section is really not as well used as some of us would like to see.

As for the forums being down, make sure you bookmark the forums over at JaguarPC. They were up for the most part when the ones here were down. It also appears that they are more actively viewed by the Jaguar support team. Don't forget to register there, or you won't see all the support posts. Doesn't hurt to check in from time to time, if only to view the announcement section.
