What's your avatar?

Forgive me, I'm bored, procrastinating my college applications AGAIN.

I just wanted to know what people's avatars meant/are. Let's NOT talk about Shady's previous one. There is already a thread about that one, heh.

Also, I've always wondering lookout, what your avatar is. I don't understand it. Also, your user title, "Kubla Khan", have you read Samuel Coleridge?

It's a cupola, Clio, reflecting my architectural background. From Latin, meaning little dome, or little tub. In some languages it just means dome. In English, it's a small, rooftop structure, sometimes with a domed cap, generally used for one or more of the following reasons:

to provide a protected observation platform (sometimes called a widow's walk or belvedere). A lookout of sorts.
to let in light below (sometimes called a lantern)
to provide ventilation (as they do on barns)
Yes, I am familiar with and enjoy Samuel Taylor Coleridge's poetry. His epic poem, Kubla Khan, has a kind of cupola in it:
In Xanadu did Kubla Khan,
A stately pleasure dome decree:
Where Alph, the sacred river, ran,
Through caverns measureless to man,
Down to a sunless sea.
So twice five miles of fertile ground,
With walls and towers were girdled round....

I would build that dome in air,
That sunny dome! those caves of ice!
And all who heard should see them there,
And all should cry Beware! Beware!
His flashing eyes, his floating hair!
Weave a circle round him thrice,
And close your eyes with holy dread,
For he on honeydew hath fed,
And drunk the milk of Paradise.
The poem has some interesting links in computer history, which appeals to my technical side. In the PBS documentary, "Triumph of the Nerds", it gets a brief mention. I don't remember the details anymore, other than it had some connection with a pioneering networking project at MIT (or some such place). There's also the Xanadu hypertext connection as per this link: http://www.zeltser.com/WWW/

Best of all, as an added bonus, if you say Kubla Khan real fast a few times, it sounds an awful lot like the name of my architectural history website: a work in progress that I poke around with when I find time.
The trouble with our times is that the future is not what it used to be.

Heh. I like his Rime of the Ancient Mariner, myself. Aaah, architecture. Heh, I've done 5 years of Latin and translated all the great authors, but learned no vocabulary of use. I can tell you all these different works for killing people and stuff, but not something like dome. Heh. I should have figured that out from the picture, heh.

I don't understand how it's self-explantory matt. It has a 'J'. There's no 'J' in your name?

Hey, Jag does read these boards, wahoo.

Matt's is the former JPC logo--something the Aletia folks (or Jag newbies) probably don't see much of.

As for mine, it really don't stand for anything....

Yeah, that's long been one of my favorites too. As for the Latin, it should serve you well when you take the GREs. Probably in pre-Law too, if that's where you're heading.
