    it's so ... large

I'm talking OSX and WindowsXP: why are the taskbars and windows captions so large? I can see them going round, because windows elements used to be square and they want to sell us something new, but why large? Does anyone really think it looks better?

I agree. I have sort of gotten used to Luna myself. That's only because it's not my computer, and I use my brother's account, because I don't have my own. When I do get my own computer, I will go back to the Windows2000 style.

When I got this machine it came with ME and an autoship backorder of XP .. but I have never installed XP .. things are going ok and I think "if I put up XP, what will not work?" .. so I never do.

What has anyone else experienced? Going from ME to XP? Is it worth doing? Any problems?

I need to get XP. I've been meaning to do it for some time now. I have ME and I hate it. My computer crashes in some form or another on a weekly basis, usually when I'm in hte middle of something important. I've been using XP at work for a while and I've never seen any problems. My main computer is Win 2k still, so I don't use XP all that often, but I do use it on a fairly regular basis. But anyway (I've been in a rambling kind of mood today)...

My current machine is my first Windows machine I have had. I used DOS way back when; then I used Macs thru the 90s .. so I don't have much to compare ME with...

It seems to be doing ok.. a freeze up every now and then - usually when I have kazillion IE window open...

So I am in the dark regarding if ME is good/bad/or indifferent in relation to W98, W2000, XP etc...

All I really heard was from a cable co. tech support guy once said "Oh, yeah, well ME .. they rushed that to get it done by the milleneum" .. so not a ringing endorsment but not a slam either.

So, in the meantime, I use it and occaisionaly look over at the brown envelope which contains XP.

I guess I should go into a circuit city or somewhere first and have a look at it ..

The hype of the ads by MS with the flying XP users sort of had me think, "Yeah, right. It must be nothing if they need to hype it that much"..

    Thanks for your info Jason..

I'd rather use Windows95 than ME. I'm a loyal MS Fan, and even I bash ME. XP is great though. Never had any problems. If you get XP, look for the version with the service pack, or download it.

Question: What is the difference between Windows XP and a virus?

Answer: A virus works every time.

In my experince (and that of many others close to me) ME was super stable compared to 98, which had some real benefits over 95.

XP is based on the 2K platform and therefore should be rock solid .... I run 2K and its been so long since I saw a blue screen that I don't even remember what they look like, maybe a year or more. I can only recommend going to XP for the stability and features it takes from 2K as I haven't used it. Windows 2000 is a good compromise, it doesn't have any of the fluff that XP seems to ship with. It has a win 98 front end but you don't have to scrape far below the surface to see the real differences, 2K is far better 'under the bonnet' (hood for the americans).

I run XP on both my laptop and my desktop. The performance has been superb. But I don't understand why a company with a marketing department as well heeled as Microsoft's would think that they need to go big and fat on the GUI.

Personally, I use Litestep and Windows Blinds/StyleXP to hide the girth, but I was just interested in knowing whether there are people out there that really like their window captions and control boxes (min, restore, and max buttons) on the heavy side.
