    Virus detection on servers

    Hi,
I think JPC should do something where messages with viruses get blocked. I get about 30-40 viruses a day and it is really getting on my nerves. I can't set up filters cause it's a different subject every time.
    Thanks,
    Paul

why don't you just install virus scanner to your email software (if you use Outlook or something)

I have one and that is where it gets annoying. The virus programs I have tried will notify you of every virus you get. You then have to hit ok on a window that pops up and then quarantine on another window. And this happens for every virus you get, so if you get 10 you can imagine how annoying that could get.

You can write a recipe to remove viruses without ever looking at them if you use your shell and set up a procmail system - or join mailshell.com (or another service) which will eliminate anything you want from your mail before you get it... It really is getting a lot easier to get rid of the junk. I have always used procmail here and /dev/null it or if it is a persistent spammer and I know the address is good, I reject their mail with a little note attached (it is done automatically) and always notify abuse@(at source)..

I understand why virus detection would be good - but Jag installing something like mailsweeper would not only put up our charges in licence terms, but would also cause jag more server administration which would increase the costs even further.

A viable solution is to install something like SOPHOS on your machine - with a script that automatically updates your virus detection(small 20k updates!).

I dont believe in trusting online virus scanners like Hotmails - simply because It fails to detect many new viruses and is always at least a week behind SOPHOS - in fact hotmail still has problems detecting YAHA-e.

    Just my thoughts.

It's not mostly about detecting viruses for my protection, I know what viruses look like and if I am not sure I always scan it but it gets really anoying getting your mailbox filled with viruses.
    Thanks,

You guys and gals all are not alone. We get them too. The subject line is getting
really inventive. Recently received one to support@condells.com, subject measurement.

We get these all the time. don't know if it is the result of a Spamers spider,
or if a customer has picked the virus up, since all headers are faked. In fact
we have received e-mail that was from us to us according to the headers. Of course
this e-mail contained a virus attachment.

I can't filter all this Spam out, or the virus. My solution. I use this program
which is free, to preview all e-mail. http://www.mailwasher.net/ I can usually
tell what is a virus, and can certainly recognize Spam. I delete everything off
the server that is Spam or that I suspect being a virus before downloading to my PC with Eudora.

Do you realize how much load it would be on the server to scan for every single e-mail for viruses?

When there was talk about a chat room a few commented they didn't want to be on the same server as a chat service because the load it would cause. Imagine the load if the servers were used to scan everyone's emails!

I suggest doing like most of us do and keep your anti-virus
up to date. Check your settings, many will allow you to let the program to remove viruses without your intervention.

But I don't think it is JPC's job to scan our emails.
