I'm not sure of the NOC is on a Worldcom backbone, but since Worldcom is so huge, I can only assume that tehy are. I do know for a fact, though, that the NOC is on many different backbones for situations exactly like this. If Worldcome pulls an Enron (sorry...) and totally disappears, the traffice that the Worldcom lines cary would, in theory, just be absorbed by the other carriers.
However, since so much of the Internet's traffic is carried on Worldcom lines (keep in mind that Worldnet owns UUNet, one of the first and one of the largest backbone providers) the Internet as a whole could have very bad things happen.

I seriously hope they don't altogether disappear. This would be very bad for business.
I know the NOC is using redundant backbone providers I was curious as to what measures Jag has in place or what precautions they will be looking into to protect itself and it's clients and limit the inevitable effects.
Aside from just relying on redundancy, I don't think there is much that can be done. I hope Worldcom straightens things out, too.

I doubt anything would come of the Worldcom situation, even if they went under there would be companies world wide looking to pick up all that fiber they own.

I am sure there are plenty waiting to pick up the peices. What I really want to know is if Jag is investigating any ways to minimize the effects it will have on JaguarPC clients?
It will not have any effect on our services.

Please don't take this to be offensive. I applaud you confidence and sencerily hope it stems from prepardness.
However it still does not answer my question(s)!
Dis, I sincerely do not know what your question is then. What exactly do you want me to respond with ? We wont be affected any more than the hundred thousand other hosts with multihomed networks.

There really isn't much more for Jag to say. The whole reason for having a multi-hommed network is exactly for this type of thing. If a provider goes down, be it for maintenance, natural disaster, financial reasons, or whatever, the others will pick up the excess traffic. That's the only assurance that really can be taken.
Don't worry, though, like Jag said, there are many companies that would love to get their paws on Worldcom's fiber, and if Worldcom does have to sell something off, that will be one of the biggest money makers for them. I heard on the news a little while ago that Verizon is already starting to eye it, as I'm sure all the other big companies--like AT&T and SBC--are, as well.
Actually, this isn't the first big communications company to run into financial problems in recent months. A few months ago Global Crossing, another large backbone provider, filed Chapter 11. There was less commotion over them than Worldcom because they are a lesser-known company, but the story is all too similar. (I know a lot about it because my local phone company was owned by CG until about a year ago and a lot of people up here had a lot of retirement savings in CG stocks, so it was all over the news.) Anyway, to make a long story short, the net didn't slow down as a result of that, and it probably won't as a result of Worldcom either.

Dis,
Personally I think Greg has answered your question.
His answers have satisfied me that Jag has taken
every step available to keep their clients on-line if something
does happen to "WorldCom".
We have a e-commerce site that has to be on-line. Greg
has satisfied me with his answers. However, sometimes "S" happens.
Another way to phrase this is that sometimes "The Best Laid Plains of
Mice or Men often go astray".
When any of the above happens and it will, you have to live with it.
That is a problem with anything electronic, and anything relating to the
Internet.![]()

To simply say "It will not have any effect on our services."
or "We wont be affected any more than the hundred thousand other hosts with multihomed networks." Lacks substantiation,
I was hoping also to solicit your opinion on the Worldcom's situation. Albeit vague I beleive you did offer that.
Sorry, there is really nothing more I can say. We're on a very multihimed network for just these situations. As for my opinion on Worldcoms situation, I dont really have one to be honest with ya. I have however been working very hard on several things since my arrival here in TX and hope to bring a lot of good news to everyone over the course of the rest of this year... the next 6 months.
