Thanks for your candid replies. My problem with what I am hearing is you are saying
that for all of our hosting clients, (remember, earlier I said that virtually every business
claims their email and website are critical) we should have a fail-over system with
    each business client's website/db/email mirrored on a server#2 and server#3.

Think about what you are saying.

--> You are saying that JPC, or any provider, is so unreliable
--> that it's necessary to have such a fail-over plan for all your business customers

Sounds kinda crazy. And the opposite of what you'd think after viewing any
provider's website, which touts their uptime, reliability and the like.
(don't get me wrong, I do understand that JPC or any provider will have downtime,
and I'm 100% fine with that. It's part of the biz)
That is not what I am saying, Every person has a different level of need, and with that level of need comes a level of cost.

You can claim all your want, but people that have true mission critical needs will pay for that. You think Amazon has one little server in some guys basement, and if that one little server goes down it would shut down a billion dollar business?

Hell Google Has Trailers that they can deploy anywhere they can find a fiber connection, That is mission Critical

As part of your standard services you should OFFER, for an added fee, fail over services, see my next post

    thx! Mark

Depends on the level you want to offer, and what services you want to do it on. Lets Start with the Levels of Failover

    Full data Mirror/Sync,
This is where the Data is accessible in many locations all at the same time, this can be a failover arrangement or a load balancing one, This is the most Complex and Costly to implement,
    Basic Redirection
This is where a Service is Redirected from one server to another when the main server is not found, This sounds simlair to the above but you may or maynot have all the data, so for exmaple you should load a "site down for maintenance" message on the redirected server so atleast the web site would be running, as well as any other services, but it would not have the same data as the main server, so for example new email would come in but you should not see the old email. Any changes to data would have to manually sync;ed with the main server once it came back up, so if using IMAP the new mail would have to be reloaded on the main server, This is less costly, as you probally will not need as big of a box since you will not be running database (and should not)
Basic Redirection would do for most people, You will have to control the DNS of all the account, do a google search for "Failover DNS" and you will find many service providers that provide failover DNS Services, this will enable you to reroute in a matter of minutes in most cases (check your TTL's) to the another server when the main one fails.

For email, as has been suggested but I take is a bit further, outsource you mail if you need it, I personally use Google Apps for all my Email, Google Apps has both Paid and Free level, however for the law firm this may not work because of the way google searchs the email for Context Ads, In this case there are many many many many Email Companies out there

There is no easy fix, if there was everyone would do it, JPC like any company has to balance cost with features, if they provided full mirror service, but the price was 3X more would you have even signed up in the first place or would you have stopped as the next website you got but loads ops bandwidth for no money?

You have to understand, this is a number game, that is the reason I got out of it

    To JaguarPC staff:

I see that you offer a $17/month "fail-over hosting" add-on for SDX hosting accounts.
However what I have is a Reseller account, VPS account, and two co-lo accounts.

Is the fail-over addon service also available for VPS or Reseller accounts?

    thx Mark

(it's has been 7 hours since the last update)

And if you could give a rough ETA that would
    be wonderful.

    Thank you

    Hi eHits,

Though I have updated the thread but I would not be able to give any eta on this , one of the biggest partitions i.e. /home is being restored and previous partitions have already taken lot more time than expected , so its difficult to give any good eta on this.

    I look forward to that!!!

I also look forward to seeing a test of the system. I'd love to see a test system set up and then have someone walk over and "kick the primary server's plug out of the wall."*

*Yes, I know the server's plug isn't in a wall socket.
    Good luck

If we are going to recount our favorite part of the Airplane movie(s), I would have to say without a doubt that it was the autopilot.

    Or the stuffed beaver.

Or "I picked a lousy week to quit methamphetamines"

    Or "I speak Jive"

Or "Surely you must be kidding."

    Or "Roger, Roger."

    Or "The commedian's a bear!" "No he's a not! He's a wearing a neck a tie!"
    Oh wait...
    Good luck
