    moving my domain [newbie question]

    hello,
im new to this all but i hope someone can help.

so i have had a domain for a while through thriftys.com and i just have it parked there and have it forward to my own hosted webserver. i now have a host here at jaguar and i would like to have the domain point to that host.

i think there is something with nameservers, i remember to have it parked i had to do something like NS1.nameserver.com

i know i could have the domain forward to my hosted IP address but thats not what i want. because once someone comes through it would look like http://XX.XX.XX.XX/index.htm instead of what i want which would be http://www.mydomainname.com/index.htm or whatever. i hope you know what im talking about.

since i didnt reg a domain though jaguar when getting the host, its not auto hooked up for me. i know there is a control panel i use through the registrars site where i set up the email and url forwarding. i would like to know what to change there or tunr off to get it here at jaguar. i thought i saw a link withing the control panels here to help switch it over but now i cant find it.
thanks for any help in advance,
    nate

    from one newbie to another

I believe that if Jaguar has set up your home folder on their server (and you've moved your files there) what you have to do is point your domain name to the jaguar nameservers. They should have told you in an email which nameservers to use. For me I believe it was ns.jaguarpc.net and ns2.jaguarpc.net (my domain name is also somewhere else).

I'm not sure what the ramifications are of moving a site and how long you will be down before the new location propagates the net. I'm sure someone else here who knows better than I will jump in with some advice.

Mike is correct. Your welcome email should have listed two nameservers to use, JPC has several and they all contain the same information, so you can use any of them. Log in to the client section (details for doing that were also in your welcome email) and click on "Network Status" to see the list. Generally you'll want to list two, but the more you list the better your redundency (if both servers you specified go down then your site will become unreachable, if you have more servers listed you'll have a better chance of having one of them working).

Once you make the change with your registrar it can usually take up to three days, and sometimes even a little longer, for the name to propagate through the Net. During that time your site will be hit or miss--some people will be able to get to it and others will be sent to the old server. Since you indicated that you are just parking your domain name right now, this probably isn't a problem for you, but just be aware that DNS changes aren't instant.

Welcome to JPC. I think you'll like it here.
