    Spam - Yuck !!!

    Hello,

I have found that the large amount of my junk mail comes from :

    Asia Pacific Network Information Centre

An IP check shows they have a range of IP's:

    202.0.0.0 - 203.255.255.255
    It goes on to say:

Comment : This IP address range is not registered in the ARIN database. For details, refer to the APNIC Whois Database via WHOIS.APNIC.NET or http://www.apnic.net/apnic-bin/whois2.pl** IMPORTANT NOTE: APNIC is the Regional Internet Registry
for the Asia Pacific region. APNIC does not operate networksusing this IP address range and is not able to investigatespam or abuse reports relating to these addresses. For morehelp, refer to http://www.apnic.net/info/faq/abuse
How can I best block these bandits from bugging me?

    Thanks

    Croc

Are the spams actually addressed to a legitimate email account, or are they coming in via your domain's catchall account?

If they are not coming in on a specific account, you might consider deleting, bouncing, or forwarding mail as it arrives in on the catchall account. This is very effective for dealing with unwanted spam not specifically addressed to someone at your domain. My experience has been that this comprises the vast majority of spam.

Two of several threads here that include info on how to go about this may be seen here and here.

I see from the 2nd thread that I list that you may have tried one of these approaches though, so maybe this is a case of spam arriving on a legitimate email account. In that case, unless you remove (and rename) the email address being targeted, you must rely on spam filter tools to do the job. Some here swear by Spam Assassin or Mail Washer. Many mail programs provide spam filtering tools, even the popular Outlook, although they are often not as effective as one would like. The spam filters in your site's control panel probably could be configured to work, but it's a tricky job getting them to work correctly without undesired side effects.

Yes, there are coming to a legitimate email account. I was wondering if it is possible/practical to block all IP's from Asia Pacific Network Information Centre

    Thanks

PS: The other method mentioned for catchall accounts works great

It should be possible to block email from a specific IP address range, but I strongly suspect you'd need better tools (and access to your mail server) than what control panel offers you.

This service might be of interest, although it's not free. Can't vouch for how well it works. I just bumped into it on the net. Might also want to look further into MailWasher. I don't think it allows IP blocking the way you want, but I hear it's pretty effective in blocking spam.

Thanks for posting that link to SpamStopsHere.com
That is very interesting, and it looks like a great business opportunity too... something other hosting companies could probably implement and charge for. ( hint, hint... and looking for forward to competition lowering the price.)
