This is the topic of multiday seminars, so I'm not going to do it justice here, but I'll give you a few pointers.
Most search engines offer a "submit a site" or "add url" page. Look at the very top and very bottom of their home pages to find it. Some, like Google, will let you submit a site for free with no guarantee of inclusion or of when they'll look at your site. Others offer a for-pay option which guarantees that they'll look at your site within a certain number of days, but still with no guarantee of inclusion. Dtill others offer only paid inclusion. If you can afford the price they want, you may wnat to consider paying it, but often if you can wait a little while you're site will end up in thier search anyway.
Google is a definite to get listed on. Also, try to get listed on dmoz.org and Yahoo, as Google uses these as feeders. If you get into one or both of these directories, you have a better shot at getting picked up by Google (and others).
Some search engines (Google again) look at the number of links pointing at you as a measure of your popularity, so if you can get you site linked other sites (especially popular ones), that helps.
There are services around that promise to get you listed on 500 million different search engines for $x or that will submit your site to the top seach engines every month or whatnot. Investigate these services wisely. I'd recommend only submitting to the top engoines, sice they'rethe ones people use most. Submitting your site to some of the more obscure engines means you're opening yourself up to spam. The method I use is to go to each engine and submit manually. It takes the longest, but at least you know what's going on that way.
Finally, the key to getting high rankings in search results is to optimize your content. Some people swear by loading sites up with meta keywords, but many engines don't look at these anymore. Some use the meta description as the description they show in search results, so you'll wnat to make sure you include that in all of your pages. Most engines today look highest at the content of the page, so make sure that you use the keywords you want people to find you site with liberally in your pages. (Don't over do it, though, too many occurances of the same word can make you look bad to an engine.) Also, use a well defined title, as they seem to cary a lot of wait these days. Instead of "ABC Company" try "Manufacturer of quality widgets in Your City and State, ABC Company."
This is a start. I'm sure others will have other ideas as well. Good luck!
