    question on spam assassin

    Hi,

I'll be signing up shortly for an account with Jaguar and wanted to know how Spam Assassin works. I am using it with another hosting company and have to log in to Horde webmail, go into the mail section, go to the spam folder, and either move or delete messages. Is this how it works with Jaguar? If not, could you fill me in?

    Thanks.

No, not quite. Here it just tags your mail as spam, but keeps it in with the rest of your new mail. I think the configuration may be a little different on different servers regarding jow the mail is tagged, but it is fairly easy to override the server defaults and set up your own rules. There's been a few posts on that on these boards in the past.

Welcome to JPC. I think you'll enjoy it here.

I used SpamAssasin for a few months, but recently turned it off.
I'm also using a local plug-in for Eudora, called Spamnix. I was finding that SpamAssasin wasn't making any extra benefit above Spamnix. Just today, I realized why. They are both based on the same code, from SpamAssasin.

But another comment I can add is that more and more spam emails are not being caught by Spamnix, because the spammers are learning to fool the algorithm. In my recent experience, 2/3rds of spam isn't being flagged by Spamnix.

It's time for a better technology.

Thanks for the replies and the welcome. With the other hosting company, I find that spam assassin works great, it's just a bit of a pain to walk through all the hoops to get to the spam. I'd rather have it as Jaguar has configured it so I can just download it and stuff it in a folder for review.

I only get about 10 spam messages per day on 2 email address and spam rarely gets through the filter and I get very few false positives (I even kept a speadsheet on this for a few weeks)

My husband has another provider. They use something called Spam Controller (not sure if that is just their name for it) It works by identifying email that have been sent to multiple recipients. There is a rejected mail log that is kept around for a week so that you can whitelist email. This seem to work very well. My husband used to get a ton of spam.

Thanks again. I'll do a search in the forums to see what else I can read on Spam Assassin.
