    New site access

    Hi,

I just joined with Jaguar today and am happy to be a member here.

After receiving my welcome emails I was able to successfully login to control panel via my IP address. I was also able to FTP into my site via IP address. I uploaded some files - and uploaded a new index.html file overwriting the one that is generically there when opening a new account.

I then go to http://ipaddress/ or http://ipaddress/index.html and I'm not having any luck. All I see with either of those is "there is no website configured at this address"

    What am I doing wrong?

    Thanks in advance!

Since you can FTP to the site I'm not sure but http://ipaddress
    should work.

    Welcome to JPC!

Did you ftp your files into the public_html (or www) directory, or just into the one that you end up in when you first log in? They need to be put inside your public_html directory. (www is a link to public_html, so you can upload files there as well.)

All is fine now! I uploaded properly, but was going to the wrong address to view!

I was supposed to go to http://ipaddress/~username

    Thanks for the help!

You must be on the v100 plan then. Glad you got it working.

Actually, I have the v400 plan. Is this the way it should be for v400?

I'm not sure. It used to be that all but the v100 plan came with a dedicated IP address, but I know that there has been talk about changing that policy lately. I don't know what has come of it or if any changes have been made yet. Normally if your site has a dedicated IP you can access it with http://ipaddress, as you have been trying to do. If you're using a shared IP then you need to add the ~username. At least, that's been my experience. Things may be configured differently now. I've been hosting here for moroe than three years and many things have changed in that time.

It appears that I am supposed to get a dedicated ip address with the v400 plan. I opened a ticket up to find out for sure. Thanks!

You may have got caught in a change of plans. Jag recently mentioned in a
post that dedicated IPs would no longer go with a plan. There would be a
small monthly additional fee for a dedicated IP. I don't recall any announcements
that this change had taken place at this time. Maybe someone in the "know"
    will elaborate on this.

Perhaps this is the thread you're looking for:

See the third post in this thread.

However, the sales pitch still says dedicated for all but V100. See this link:

    Mike

The first thread is the one I was referring to. In regard to the link to the plans,
Jag has been known to get the cart before the horse.

No, by ipaddress, we mean the actual IP address of the site--the numerical address that the site is mapped to. When accessing your site by IP address you would use a url similar to http://123.54.67.89.

Every computer connected to the Internet needs to have at least one IP address. It works kind of like a phone number; when another computer wants to talk to your server it sends out a message saying I want to talk to the computer with this IP address. Domain names are designed to make it easier for humans to find what they need on the net. When you type in a domain name your computer must look up that name in a DNS server's database. The DNS server then returns the IP addess for that name, which your computer then uses behind the scenes to make the requested connection.
