    Question Modify MX Entry

Could somebody explain the 'Modify MX Entry' function in CPanel to me?

I have a user who wants to send email for a subdomain to an email server on a different host. He tried to set up an MX entry in CPanel, but it didn't work (he tried IP and FQDN). So I contacted support and they set it up. However, they said that since the site (http) for the subdomain will remain on our account, the MX record has to ībe set up by support.

So, what is the function in CPanel for, and how would you use it?

It seems odd that - in order to get it working - support has to set it up anyway.

    Thanks.

I'm interested in this too. I hope support folks or knowledgable persons will respond. I thought the change MX records feature would be useful to me someday, but I haven't actually needed it yet.

MX "Mail eXchanger" records are what direct incoming mail to your site's SMTP server. If you want your web site hosted with Jag, but your mail going in to an on site server, for instance, you'd set the MX record for that site to point at the name of the on-site server. If my memory serves me correct, you generally use the FQDN of the SMTP server in the MX record--but I haven't had to mess with DNS configs for a few years, so I could be wrong.

I haven't tried changing the MX records on my site, so I can't comment on how well the CP feature works/doesn't work. It could be another one of those CP features that wasn't quite ready to go into production (like mailbox quotas were for a long time), or perhaps the tech that responed to the ticket didn't realize that CP has been upgraded to include that feature. Maybe both...

Thanks for the update. I got the response from support that there is nothing the user can do with the feature in cpanel since they set it up, so I guess it's one of those things that isn't quite ready for production yet.
