    Oh Crap.... (IP changes)

    Uh-oh.

I'm not a regular visitor to these forums (I know, I should be) and apparently I didn't get the e-mail that was surely sent out.

Just NOW discovered the IP address changes when I ran a DNS search on my domain name and the IP that it resolved to is different than the one I've been using all this time. It didn't take long reading this forum to discover why.

In the past few months, I have completely changed my site! Almost nothing is the same as it was when the IPs were changed! Now, I'm stuck with the brand new site that's at the wrong IP address and the site that's at the correct IP (the new one) is months old and hasn't been used since the IPs changed.

Am I going to have to set up everything all over again at the new IP, then point the domain at it or is there an easier way?

I really feel like a total idiot right now....

Well, I would guess only you can answer that. Personally, I didn't have to do anything, nor do I remember reading about anyone else having to do anything. It was a seamless swithover as far as I know.

Hmmm... I don't think you grasped my problem completely. It's like I've just painted this big house and then someone comes along and tells me that I was supposed to paint the one across the street.

My domain name has been pointed at the wrong IP address for 3 months. Both IPs are still valid. Before the move, I was on Nickel. Now I'm on Falcon. So, since no one in my camp knew about the move, we've been using and updating the site on Nickel for the last 3 months when, in fact, our site was moved to Falcon and we never knew it! Now, there is no more "we." The site is mine alone and used for personal things, but I've just spent the last week changing it completely from what it used to be.

So, in a nutshell, my domain resolves to the old site (on Nickel) which is what I and my users have been visiting every day for the past 3 months. That's what I've updated and maintained for 3 months. Meanwhile, the "real" site (which was moved to Falcon unbeknownst to me) has been sitting there untouched for 3 months.

If the old IP addy were to stop working tomorrow, everything I've created will be gone. The site that's on the new server is nothing but a 3 month old ghost of what I've created. Basically, I have 2 sites at 2 different IPs but only one domain name and that 1 domain is pointed at the wrong site because I didn't now the other site even existed.

Sigh.... I'm gonna go bang my head against a wall now.

Hrm... well, I suppose this is a rather unique situation. I would just backup my old (new) site and move it to my new (old) site; then tell them to kill my old (new) site and change the records to point to my new (new) site...

    OK, I'm confused, Vin...

When the IP's were changed, servers were not. If they moved you to another server, it was probably for some other reason unrelated to the IP changes. I would do as Vin suggested--back up your correct site and upload it to the new IP. Its not that difficult to do. If you have any databases on the site, use phpMyAdmin to do a mysqldump and then upload the dump file to the new server. Or, open a support ticket and explain your quandry to support and they can probably make the switch for you.

If I understand this correctly, this can happen if the site was ever moved across servers and the old site was not removed. Please submit a support ticket on this and the techs should be able to get this straightend out.

Yeah, the easy way would be to just backup and restore. Sadly, I'm a dial-up user and even downloading the daily back-up file would take me many many hours. It'd be faster to just upload everything to the new IP from my hard drive.

Not really that difficult, just time-consuming and frustrating. I have 2 forums, 1 chat room, 1 guestbook, and a counter to set up again (the forums alone can be a royal pain in the @$$, as I'm sure you know).

Thanks for your suggestions. I think I'll have it sorted out soon.

Caveat: "This will only work if both FTP servers support remote to remote transfers."

I haven't tried this since 'they' installed the new server software here, so it's a crap shoot. That's a pun, son!
