Counters generally don't give very accurate reports of visitors to your site, so most webmasters don't use them these days. Log analysis is a much better option. Every time someone requests a page on your site it is listed in your site's access log. You can then run the log file through an analysis program (there are three such programs built into CPanel) and get a report of much more than just the number of hits. It will show you things like which pages are the most popular, what times of the day your site is most popular, the types of browsers your users are running, historical page counts (how many visitors you got in January vs. February, for example), and much, much more.

If you just want a simple hit counter, however, I wrote one a while back for a client that I've provided on this board for others in the past. You can download it from http://scripts.interbrite.com/ibcount.zip. Consult the readme.txt file for instructions on how to set it up.
