    Anyone heard of JAlbum?

I use Gallery on about 5 different sites, and while I like it, there are some things I don't like (slow speed, navigation, poll implementation, etc). So a friend of mine told me this photo gallery script is great. I checked it out and cosmetically it looks pretty good. It's missing some features I need (ability to comment for one). But I could do a little modification here and there.

I went to download and install it and got an error saying that this machine didn't have the Java Runtime installed. Should I just give up on this? Is the runtime installed and just not set in the PATH or something? I'm getting a little bit of a feeling that this script is not really meant for shared hosting but rather more for personal local machine use. Any comments?

JAlbum generates web photo albums. These are static albums made out of html files that you definitively can publish on the web. To make sure you have a good Java version, download the latest for your machine from http://java.sun.com first (RPM packages is recommended)

Ok I got it. So this is something I MANUALLY do on my local machine and then FTP the page(s) to the server? Sounds kind of tedious. If I want to add a photo I have to run the thing and send the thing up the server every time?

I really like coppermine. But, integrating the layout into a site is one hell of a pain in the neck to accomplish. I've switched back to Gallery since. Much easier to work with in the long run.

Well, I guess it's all relative. I know Coppermine will do all the things HE wants to do and more. You can actually set it up as a portal and let other ppl upload photos to their own galleries. Their galleries can be displayed to the public and/or be private. YOU can moderate (okay) the pics before they are displayed, yada, yada, yada...

How complex you want to make this is up to YOU. You can go the easy route or the hard route, but if you want to do it right, it's gonna take some work. I hate to tell you that, Mike, 'cause it seems that you're somewhat work adverse...

Anyway, Salewit, I'm running a couple of Coppermine installs on JagPC servers right now, if you wanna take a peek.

    Here's Coppermine 1.1d on top of PHP-Nuke 6.5:

    Here's Coppermine 1.2.2b on top of CPG-Nuke 8.0:

It might give you an idea of the speed, or lack thereof, as the case may be, et cetera.

BTW, you can upload pics to the first URl if you want to test that feature out. Just mouse-over the '@' symbol to bring it up. The second URl still has some issues with CPG-Nuke, which I'm beta testing. CPG-Nuke has only been out for a couple of weeks and is buggier than a lollipop in an ant farm...
