Anyone else seeing timeouts in POP

As seemingly usual, a new virus appeared in my mailbox this morning. Seems like the virus kiddies are timing their virii to be deployed right around the time that Norton releases a new signature set...

In the meantime, My POP3 access is timing out for all my accounts, and the client network status page shows everything is fine.

It's probably my ISP blocking (due to the virus perhaps?) ... but maybe not... anyone else having a problem this AM?

I've had minor timeout problems for the last couple of days too. Always check my mail first through mailwasher. At first a couple of my domain based accounts usually time out, but if I turn around and check them again right after I get the timeout msg they go through ok.

first it was 4 accounts that were timing out, then I attempted to receive from two other accounts, then it was only two of the original 4 accounts that were timing out... both of them catchall accounts....

So I shut down outlook and restarted it.... et Voila!
    Thank goodness for Microsoft!
How could I survive without a GUI and all this excitement?!?

Are you on Oxygen perhaps? I've had popmail time out too recently from time to time. When I start looking around at such moments it turns out that everything is extremely sluggish (but up and running) and "uptime" shows exteme loads on the server (I've seen a 12.xx 15 minute average three days ago.)

I've noticed the thing being overloaded intermittently for about a month now. Apparently the bad apple script or scripts are hard to track down, still I hope support catches it soon.

I dont know if it has anything to do with your problems, but I havent been able to get any of the mail from 9 POP acounts on my site. I have a ticket open and the send my directions on how to get my mail without going to cpanel, and that dont work either.
I hope someone figures it out soon!!!

You should be able to access POP by using your domain name as the host. You usually have to use your full email address (bob@yourdomain.com) as the username in your POP client, though, unless you are using the default account--then you just need the username portion.

My problem is (hopefully was) intermittent. Your additional post makes it sound all different in your case.

I haven't heard of any ISP blocking trafic from POP mailbox to client for any reason yet.

My only problem with time outs is with MailWasher. When I have e-mail on one
account MailWasher will often show all the other POP accounts as timed out.

In downloading the e-mail I very seldom have a time out problem.

You know, I hate to say this because I always thought POP3 was so cool and everything... but, damnit, I'm getting spammed to death. So, I've been using SquirrelMail instead of POP3 lately. I can login to SquirrelMail and kill all the messages, in all my accounts, faster than it takes to download mails from a single account using POP3. Really! And, I don't have to worry about worms and all that nonsense.

Personally, until things change for the better, I'm just going to keep using webmail...

*note* This board has been throwing out 'server too busy' errors for the last 2-3 days, killing my replies... irritating, to say the least..

Anyway, what I had said before being dissed by the server was that I switched to using web-based readers about 5 months ago. I saw a slight increase in the number of messages (obviously a fluke), but where they used to be Pr0n, they are now poorly-spelled ads for medication and mortgages.

Apparently, if porn doesn't do it for you, you need a pharmacy and low, low financing to get an erection.

*note to Scott* I got into the habit, years ago, of copying any and all replies to the clipboard, using standard keyboard shortcuts, before previewing/submitting them. That way if something happens (Murphy's Law there somewhere, I'm sure) you won't lose your work.

Assuming you are running Windows, all you have to do is hit Ctrl-A to mark your message, and Ctrl-C to copy it to your clipboard. Then, if something happens, you can come back later and paste your message back into the reply box using Ctrl-V.

BTW, this works with ALL Windows programs. It's a great way to interchange data between apps...

yup - I generally do that on long posts, or when a particular board acts up (like this one). I've just gotten used to stuff working that I take it for granted. But I still hit ctrl+S involuntarily everytime I pause, whether the situation calls for it or not

funny you should mention shortcuts... I spend quite a lot of time with applications like photoshop, where I couldn't survive without 'em. In fact, when I go to CBT off-site, the first thing I do is assign hotkeys to the apps I'll be using.

heck - i've even got a 'claw-like' ctrl+alt+shift+A hotkey for locking my workstation in one motion, just to save the ctrl+alt+del, enter sequence

Ohhh for the days of edlin, wordstar and wordperfect...

Back in the days when editing was fast and easy, and you didn't have to take your hands from the keyboard to manipulate a mouse.

People are always amazed when I use ctl-A, ctl-x-or-c, ctl-v... I miss the days of using TEX on GCOS What a powerful editor and language that was...
    b;12 c/foo/foobar; b;12 p;23 <enter>

How arcane is that kind of command to do editing by...

Then sending output to a highspeed band printer to work on the program via printout instead of online....

And ohhhh those coding forms for COBOL and FortranIV....

    Well, ok.... some things sucked.
