    Mutli-hosting questions

Planning to start a new site and will eventually get an account for it seperately, but for now I'd like to multi-host it and have a few questions.

    1) With AletiaNIC, how do I point the domain name to the multihosted site? It only accepts IP addresses, so I can't just point it to multihosted.maindomain.com.

    2) Is it possible to install phpBB to multihosted.com/forum since it's actually maindomain.com/multihosted/? I ask b/c the phpBB installer in cPanel says that it can ONLY install to a top level directory and multihosted.com/forum/ would, in reality be a second level directory even though it appears to be top level. I don't use cPanel to install phpBB, but I'm wondering if this will be a problem anyway.

    3) When I'm ready to move the domain to it's own account instead of having it multihosted, how much trouble is that gonna be and how much downtime might I expect for the site?

    Thanks

Are you using Enom DNS or Jag DNS?

if your using Enom you need to set the A Record for Jags Server

Which if is only allowing IP that what it sould like, but I have not used enom in awhile

if you want to use Jags Name servers set the Name Server (NS) record to Jags Nameservers

then you have to contact Support to Point the Domain for you

and yes you can install phpbb on a Subdomain, or Multihosted domain

In realtiy your new domain will appear to the outside world the same as your Old Domain

it will not be formated in MulitHosteddomain.Maindomain.com

but it will be used only as Mulithosteddomain.com

the server will then send all requests to that File Folder on the box

As "Osprey" said, it is much easier to let JPC worry about the DNS. If you've used AletiaNic to register your domain, log in and do the following:

    1. Under "Overview" on the left side of the page, click "My Domains."
    2. Select the multihosted domain from the list of domains that you've registered.
    3. If you see "Current Service: - Our DNS servers -" click on "Change Service" and select "user." Otherwise click on "Configure."
    4. Enter at least two of JPC's DNS servers. You can find all of the pairs that they have available on the network status page of the clients serction. Most popular are ns.jaguarpc.net and ns2.jaguarpc.net or ns.nocdirect.com and ns2.nocdirect.com.

The benefit of letting JPC do the management is that if they move your site to a different server they'll do the DNS maintenance for you. Since they offer this service as part of your hosting, you might as well take advantage of it.

Yes, I would prefer using Jag's name servers. Unfortunately, if you change the DNS servers at aletiaNIC, that also prevents you from altering ANY other domain settings.

    Galen,

Back to your original question, DNS servers only map names to IP addresses. Every site in an account will have the same IP address (whether it is the server IP or a dedicated IP for the account). Apache is responsible for connecting the user to the requested site, using the HOST variable passed by the browser, once the IP is resolved. To point your multihosted domain name at the site, just create an A record with the same IP as your main site resolves to.

As for letting JPC manage your DNS, I know in the past they have been willing to add/edit records for clients (such as changing MX records to point to an off-site mail server or adding additional A records). It is a pain in that you have to wait for it to be done, but given the simplicity of such requests and the usual speed of JPC support, I'd suspect such requests would be completed quickly.
