I haven't read any complaints about this lately, but it took me several tries to backup my site...

Used cPanel. 130 MB GZ file was corrupt (trailing garbage). Hrm...

Dumped my cache and tried it again with the same result. Oh, well! HTTP transfers suck! I'm surprised it ever works. I've never had cPanel fail twice, but there's a first time for everything!

Tried SSH next. 360 MB straight up. I started the download and went to bed. Sometime during the night, my Internet connection barfed. It was a stupid idea anyway!

This morning I tried WS_FTP Pro. Surprise, surprise! SFTP finally works. That's the first time since I've been a client here. I went ahead and downloaded all 360 MB. This time the connection held.
Half a day later, I finally had a good backup, but I decided to do it one more time, the good ol' way. I shelled into my account, TAR'ed my site and downloaded the 125 MB file to my local machine using SFTP. Went smooth as silk, and the file tested good for integrity.
Now, I'm confused...
When did SFTP start working?
Is anyone else having problems using cPanel to backup their site[s]? If so, what do you use?
When I TAR'ed my site, it took a minute or two. When cPanel does it, it's instantaneous. How can this be? Maybe that's why the files are corrupt...
Any thoughts on all this?

If it's a meg or two, I'm not so sure your .tar or .gz has not been corrupted - unless your content is just miniscule. But tar and gzip are pretty good at compressing things. You'll have to do a Google search to really get down to their efficiency rate.
