What do you mean by "often?" I've been on silicon for a long time and haven't noticed many problems. Granted, I don't stay connected to it 24/7, but I do keep email checks running for 8-12 hours a day and I haven't noticed much downtime.

Could you be a little more specific about the problems you're seeing?

whenever any problems occured, I always login to the member area of jaguarpc.com
and then click dns status at the bottom of the menu on the left hand side.

it shows the red signal of the silicon. I guess it is down by that mean.
well.. it is reasonable tiny problem to me. just these days, I have to re-new my www.coolma.com. and change the name of the server of it from ns &ns2 to ns3&ns4, and silicon was down for a while.

because while I am working on , those come to bother my website at the same time.

do you know how often they do the maintanence.?

    Nice looking website!

I do not know why you had to change the name servers to ns3 & ns4. I would change them to:

    ns.nocdirect.com
    ns2.nocdirect.com

That took care of many problems for me...

Usually, if they are doing maintenance that will cause downtime, they either announce it on the forums beforehand. I haven't seen any announcements for a while. Sometimes they have to do emergency maintenance, but even then they usually follow up with an explaination. Sometimes servers do crash, too. When they do, unless it is due to a hardware failure, the staff is usually pretty good about getting service restored quickly. I'd suspect that this is what happened to you.

Looking at silicon's uptime, I see that it has only been up for about 8 hours at the time of this post. It must have recently been rebooted. Hopefully that will stabilize it now.

I also don't understand why you need to change your name servers. If you are using the jaguarpc.net series, you should always use ns.jaguarpc.net since that is the primary server. You can use any of the other ones if you want (you need at least two, more are fine, though).

Are you sure about using all of those jaguarpc.net series additions? I used to have a couple of them entered as tertiary/quaternary backup NS listings but removed them after observing errors in a DNS diagnostics site.

Check out Interbrite's DNS NS listings and notice the "failures". Is that an acceptable level for you?

I'm in agreement that more than two and less than or equal to six is probably an ideal setup; but if errors are listed that indicate improper NS usage, I'm not adding the superfluous ones.

What do you make of all this?

Did they say to switch or to add the other two? Adding them gives you more redundancy--four machines to answer requests instead of just two, so if one or two go down the rest can still respond. Changing them just doesn't make any sense to me.

Who said anything about it being against their wishes?

    From the JagPC client section...

What do 'they' list as their primary and secondary name servers?
