SpamAssassin breaks subj. rewrite in v3?

I opened a ticket regarding failed subject rewrites from SpamAssassin. After a couple of days of frustration where each of us thought the other did something odd, it turns out that SA v3 (apparently the current version) does not correctly render rewrite directives, at least not through the CPanel install version.

I had used the default install to add ***SPAM*** to junk identified by SA, then had that just deleted by the basic filters in CPanel.

So, does anyone install SpamAssassin outside of CPanel? Is that even possible? What are people using?

    Hey Lokki,

I may have misunderstood your question. There have been a lot of post in reagrd to SpamAssassin. For some people it works and for others it doesn't. I've never used it. 99% of the spam I receive comes to one account. I use Mailwasher to deleate that without having to download the Spam. The Spam that goes to the catch all account is automatically deleated by the server so I never see that.

The only reason I keep the 1 account that gets a lot of Spam is the filters will not work if the account is deleated. I forward the email that I want to keep from that account to another account.

Based on my limited understanding of SpamAssassin if it is working correctly it just marks e-mail as possible spam an places it into another folder that you still have to review and decide what to deleate.

For me its just simpler to do this with MailWasher.

    Hi Connie,

Yeah, SpamAssassin does just that... it marks mail as possible spam, then optionally moves it to a spambox folder.

Up until a week or so ago, it was working fine, and I had it set to rewrite the subject line. I then d/l all the crap, and filtered it with my local mail client, just in case something got marked incorrectly. After several months of this, I decided I had it tuned pretty well, and started just killing the stuff right on the server (with a filter). That was great for a few days, then SA got upgraded and I lost that capability. I am told the developers are working on the solution. Don't really know what that means!

I might try MailWasher, and there are a few others that have been reviewed by PCMagazine, so it's probably worthwhile to start investigating those alternatives.

    Lokki,

Your problem is very simular to a lot of the old post about SpamAssassin. It works for a litlle while and suddenly stops working corectly. I think most people who have tried SpamAssassin either love the program or hate it.

In regard to MailWasher, I orginally bought the program from the man who developed it. I used his free download for a period of time and then purchased. Don't remember what I gave. One thing was the promise of free lifetime upgrades. Since then he sold out to Fire trust. I still get free upgrades from FireTrust.

The good thing for me is Mailwasher checks all my e-mail. I can preview it if I want to. Then I deleate off the server what I don't want. Then I download. I don't want to have to download all the crap to my PC in order to delete it. As you know a lot of the Spam contains a virus. So I just won't download it in order to deleate.

Pegaus mail offers the same preview delete off the server feature as MailWasher and Pegaus is free.

I'm sure there are others that do a good job too. Good luck in your quest. Each of us has to deal with this growing Spam problem the best way we can. What works for one person will not always be the best solution for another.
