    Setting up a new account/propagating

    Hey folks,

As my handle will attest, I know nothing about any of this stuff. This is my first ever attempt to build a site on the web and my first experience with any hosting service or the actual nuts and bolts of getting a site online.

I got the standard email from JAG once I ordered. Along with other stuff, it provided me with the following information:

    A server name
An IP address to use until propagation
Two name servers for NIC updating (WTF is this all about?)

Aside from screwing around and putting an invision message board on my site, I havent done anything with this information. My understanding is that it can take up to four days to propagate.

When I go to my site using the actual name of it, I get the following message:

    "Welcome to your future Website
In order to view your website, please remove this file "index.html" and replace it with your own index.html file."

When I attempt to connect to my site using the "2082" extension number thingy, I get a message saying my page could not be displayed.

So, my questions are, what do I do with the NIC name server information? And am I currently in the process of being propagated or do I have to do something else before I propagate? And how do I remove that index.html file and replace it with my own?

    Thanks.

The ultimate question is: Where is your domain name registered? You'll have to go to that registrar and point your domain name to Jag's nameservers.

This is a guess, but right now it sounds like your domain name is propagated and is pointing to another server, somewhere other than your new Jag account.

My domain is registered with ipowerweb. I dont need to transfer it right?

Can i change the domain pointer myself, or do I need the company to do it?

You don't normally have to change registrars, it's certainly not a requirement of Jag's. As long as the registration is current and it can be pointed, you're all set.

As for who will have to point the domain to Jag's nameservers, for that I'm afraid, I can't answer for you because I've never dealt with Ipow-wow-web.

Like Ron I'm not famiular with Ipow-wow-web. Most registers today provide a CP so you have the ability to manage your domain. By defalt when you register a name the register will oftern point it to a construction page of something like that which is oftern refered to as Free Parking. If you don't have a CP then your going to have to e-mail the new name servers to Ipow-wow-web and have them make the change for you.

    Okay guys.

I got the following email from IPowerWeb:

    Dear Customer,

Your domain is unlocked at this time.

It will take 24 hrs before this domain appears unlocked through out the
    Web

Okay, what exactly does this mean? And how do I get my site pointed at the Jag servers or whatever so that I can be on my way to just typing in my domain name and seeing my site?

    Thanks

Did you send them the DNS numbers for JPC? If so I think they may be using the term unlock
to mean propagate. After a DNS change it takes 24 hours to a week in some cases for the name to fully propagate. Since I don't know anything about Ipow-wow-web I'm just guessing.

I havent sent powerweb any information with regards to DNS numbers. I dont even know what a DNS number is.

I simply asked them to unlock my domain as instructed above. I was under the impression that I could change the name servers or whatever the hell I need to do on my own. However, I cannot find any place to do that.

To summarize, this is what I did.

I registered my domain name with powerweb.
I recently signed up for Jag Hosting.
I then access my site through the IP address that Jag gave me in my account setup email.
I then had a message board installed.

Now I want to be able to simply type in my domain name as registered and see my page.

Above I was told that I need to change my "pointers" so that they point to Jag. So, I asked Power to unlock my site. Now, what do I do?

What is missing in my head is this: I am trying to figure out how you got from being told to point your domain to Jag's DNS servers to telling IPW to "unlock" (whatever that means) your domain.

Anyway, you need to find a way to get your registrar IPW, to point your domain name at the DNS servers, as your welcome email told you.

If you can't figure this out with IPW, open a ticket and see if JAG can help you with more specific info.

    Good luck!

In one of the posts above, I was told that usually you can change your name server information yourself because many sites allow you to manage this information via your control panel.

I couldnt find that information/section on my CP to change myself. So, I called IPower on Friday and talked to the guy and told him I need to change my name servers. I told him I am using a different host company, etc.

He said, we lock your domain or something like that and that that would need to be unlocked before anything could happen. So, he made a ticket for me and submitted it and said I should hear back from support this weekend.

Then, I copied the email that I got.

At this point, being Sunday evening, Ill just start calling Jag and IPower tomorrow and find out what I need to do.

However, thanks again to you and others for trying to help me. It is appreciated.

It sounds like what he did was to unlock the registration of your domain to allow it to be transferred from IPW to another registrar. Try to get them to allow you to manage your domain name, or ask them to point the domain at Jag's DNS servers.

Better yet, just ask JAG to transfer the name to AletiaNIC for you.... they'll do that AND extend the life of the registration for a year for $10. Can't go wrong with that!

Now, remember, I am The UltimateDumbass. But I got it figured out.

I got some online chat help and the guy gave me a link to this site that allowed me to change the name servers myself.

So, anyway, I got it all fixed.

    Thanks again.
