Question The usual domain registration & propagation problems...

I ran all the searches on all the relative keywords, and I still can't find what I really need. Here's the situation:

    - I purchased the Gigadeal (chose "Please register my domain name for $9.95"), started working on my website.
    - I waited four days for my domain name to propagate, assuming Jag was gonna handle registration for me. I checked to see if it was even registered, and it wasn't.
    - I go to aletiaNIC.com and register it myself, since I can't seem to get anyone on the phone at Jaguar.
    - Made www.vivixen.net redirect to the temporary site Jag gave me: http://saturn.nocdirect.com/~jvivixen

    Here are the problems:

    1) Address bar still shows "http://saturn.nocdirect.com/~jvivixen"
    2) People browsing the forums I set up are having problems when the site brings them to links containing "vivixen.net" ... it brings them to the aletiaNIC.com placeholder site for http://vivixen.net (note the lack of "www").

Examples: Logging in/out brings us to the placeholder. The activation link for the forum (which begins as http://vivixen.net/forums....) also brings users to the placeholder.

Did I do something wrong? If so, what exactly is wrong and how do I go about fixing it?

    Thanks for reading!

I'm not sure since you didn't mention how long ago you registered the name. Personally I think you need to change the redirect at aletiaNIC.com. This address is given so that you can upload files etc. prior to the prorogation. http://saturn.nocdirect.com/~jvivixen and I wouldn't want that address showing in a visitors address bar. I think if you remove the redirect in a couple of days all issues will be resolved.

Hopefully someone will come along shortly and give you a better answer.

The registration process is a little tricky, and you aren't the first to complain about it on these forums. When you chose the option to register a new domain name when you sign up for hosting, you get a message at the end of the process that says something along the lines of "now got to AletiaNIC to register your domain name." Lots of people miss that, you aren't alone. At least you've gotten through that step.

The next thing that you need to do is change your name servers with AletiaNIC so that requests for your domain name are pointed at the JPC servers. Right now they are likely pointed at the generic name-services.com servers, which are owned by eNom, who runs AletiaNIC for JPC. The nocdirect.com address that JPC gave is, as Connie mentioned, mainly just for you to test your site out while your name propagates.

Here's what you need to do:

    1. Log in to AletiaNIC and choose Domain Names > My Domains > vivixen.net.
    2. The next screen will say "Domain Names" and then something like "Current Service: Our DNS Servers." Click on the "Change Service" button.
    3. On the next screen, choose "user" and click "Save Changes."
    4. You'll now be prompted for your DNS servers. Enter "ns.jaguarpc.net" in the first box, followed by ns2.jaguarpc.net." Then click "Save Changes" again.
    5. You'll then be back to the page you were at on in step 2. Your account has been updated and you take effect within 24 hours. However, there may still be up to 48 additional hours to wait for the chagne to propagate to all of your users.

    Good luck.

And this should fix the Address Bar problem?

Problem #2 is already fixed... everything works fine now, but what's up with the Addy Bar still showing the redirect?

By the way, thanks for all the help! I notice you're a very helpful individual on these forums, Jason. :

    Yes.

That will go away once your name fully propagates. For me right now at work it is gone. I've never accessed your site from here before, so our DNS servers had to pull your DNS record in order to resolve your site and got the new info--so everything has been updated. The reson for propagation delays is that DNS servers usually hold on to that infromation for a couple of days in order to speed up rottine requests. Since you are probably accessing your site regularly from the same ISP, you will be one of the last people to see the change because your ISP has your site info cached. Once the cache expires you'll see the change too--most likely sometime today.

You're welcome. I have a lot of experience in networking, system administration, and other various "hosting" issues and try to help out whenever I can. It is always nice to know that help is appreciated.

    Good luck with your site.

Jasons posted method is the correct answer.

However for the curious the other way you could have "fixed" this was to choose URL FRAME in your aletianic.com interface rather than URL REDIRECT.

Perhaps you should create a link to a PayPal tip jar to see how appreciated you are. Since you aren't subsidized by Jaguar, it seems only fair.
