    Disk usage

Quick question: I deleted most of the content from my account (using FTP) but the control panel still shows that I am using more than 142mb.

I checked using "du" and it shows that I am only using 30mb (logs, spamassasing and various other stuff)

Is the value shown in the control panel updated after only a certain time or is something broken?

    Thanks.

Try the 'Disk Usage Viewer' in cPanel, and see what it says...

DISCLAIMER Any resemblance between the views expressed above and those of the owners and operators of this system is purely coincidental. Any resemblance between these views and my own are non-deterministic. The existence of Vin DSL is questionable. The existence of views in the absence of anyone to hold them is problematic. The existence of the reader is left as an exercise in the second-order coefficient.

It seems to show the correct info. About 11mb in /public_html and another 10-12 in /temp

So it's only the "disk usage" figure on the main CPanel page that off by 100mb.

Yeah, that tends to be wildly inaccurate at times. For instance, a couple of weeks ago, it said I had only used like 27 MB of disk space. This week it say 859 MB which is closer to the truth.

I don't know how cPanel calculates these totals...

Hold on, I'll do a 'du'...
    • 'du' shows 908,212
    • The main cPanel page shows 825,890
    • 'Disk Usage Viewer' shows 1,454,520
    LoL! Take your pick.

    I was just thinking...

I did a backup using cPanel a couple of nights ago. This is basically a mirror of my entire site, even things I have no control over. Here's a screenshot of a test I did.

If you'll notice, it is essentially the same as the 'Disk Usage Viewer.' I would say that's the true size of my site. However, I don't have any control over a lot of that stuff. I have control over 800-900 MB, and that's what my 'du' and the main cPanel page are showing.

Having said that, there is a difference of almost 100 MB in my case too. So, I don't know what to tell you...

Thanks for your comments. Since I am in no danger of exceeding the 1gig limit I am not worrying too much.

Just wanted to clear up what disk usage CPanel was showing.

I wouldn't blindly trust the info cPanel is giving out about our accounts. There has been "some" problems in the past and there's still "issues" here and there.
