This is a discussion on shopping carts - Agora vs. osCommerce in the Shared & Semi-Dedicated forum
Both of these carts are offered in CPanel. Can anyone recommend one over the other? I was hoping to be able to make a decision ...

shopping carts - Agora vs. osCommerce

Both of these carts are offered in CPanel. Can anyone recommend one over the other? I was hoping to be able to make a decision on the basis of overall functionality but they both seem to offer a wide range of features. I definitely need CC verification, UPS/FedEx shipping automatically added to totals, tax added where applicable, volume discounts, previous order summaries, the works I guess. Unfortunately I just don't have time to install and learn both.

No shopping cart offers CC Verification. That is done through your 3rd party CC processor (such as Authorize.net or Verisign etc.)

so your first step it to see if either have a module for your Processor.

Next will be which language your more comftable with, PHP or Perl.

Those would be the 2 biggest factors between the 2 carts

Thanks for replying. I should have been more specific.
I poked around both of their homepages and saw that both offer CC verification through third parties. They both contain the basics, or seem to. Your mentioning PHP/Perl reflects on why I raised the topic here. I'm only vaguely familiar with either, meaning I'll have a learning curve to go through and right now don't have the luxury of going through two learning curves, which I'd have to do in order to give both a fair trial. My hope is to connect with someone who has had enough experience with both to offer an informed opinion.

well it is my opinion that PHP is easier than perl.

With that said I have no experience with Agora but I have loads with OSC, I was modifing and created carts with their software before it was even called OSC (was called the exchange project), though I have been out of the game for about 7mos

OSC in its defualt form is not the most developer friendly Project, espically for changing the Look and Feel of the cart

However if you get one of the many premodded distributions out there (one I have used in the past is at phesis.co.uk) that has a template system this will go a LONG LONG way in lowering your learning curve

OSC is a very good cart platform with a strong community supporting it,

but like I said I know nothing about the other one

FYI: OSC it is. I installed the version from Control Panel. That'll give me something to kick around while I learn a few things.

Appreciate your advice about phesis.co.uk. I spent some time on their site and see why you mention premodded, and that one in particular. As things stand now I'll most likely start to build for real with that distribution early next week.

    Thanks for your time.
