    Can someone please explain this?

Can someone please explain this, either to me or to tech support?

    Hi,

When I try to access my database via the command line, I am receiving the following error:

ERROR 2002: Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock' (2)

I am told from my clients that my forum (which uses this database) was unavailable with a "cannot connect to the database" error, for a little while about 18 hours ago; this may be related to whatever that problem was, or it may not be related. Just thought I should point it out.

    -Ron.

Still not able to connect to the database on the command line via SSH -- see the following:
    jailshell-2.05a$ date; mysql -u <myusername> -p <mydatabasename> ;date
    Fri Mar 18 07:18:18 CST 2005
    Enter password:
ERROR 2002: Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock' (2)
    Fri Mar 18 07:18:23 CST 2005
    jailshell-2.05a$

However, my webpages are working just fine. Would you kindly check that they continue to work fine by visiting
http://<my forum's address> AFTER working on the database? Thanks.

    Hi,

The shell you are working on is a called jailshell. As it's name suggest it is a very restricted type shell. Using jailshell you cannot access mysql. I hope this clarifies your doubt.

Of course I've been using mysql through jailshell since jailshell was introduced here, and through the bash shell before that. This is a most frustrating response...

    Heh! This is fun!

    I see three possibilities...

First and foremost, possibility #1 - I would say that you have a corrupt or missing symlink...

Possibility #2 - you said that your (obfuscated) link works fine. It's just the 'mysql' client, in SSH, that isn't working. This would suggest that JagPC has recently changed their SOP, as far as JailShell is concerned. But, I'm not buying it...

Possibility #3 - whomever you 'talked' to doesn't know their a$$ from a hole in the ground.

    I'm picking door #3...

Sorry I didnt see this thread before.
Just in case it's still relevant, try adding -h HOSTNAME parameter:
    Code:
    mysql -u <myusername> -p <mydatabasename> -h localhost
If that doesn't work too, try your domain name instead of localhost.

This is definitely server misconfiguration, but those who don't realize that will probably have a hard time fixing it.

I should have updated this thread. Support got it fixed on the 21st.

Thanks for the suggestion... it was of course a server misconfiguration. Someone moved the MySQL directory frmo /var to /home. jailshell has no rights to /home except for your own directory.

Fortunately during this timeframe, apache had access. Judging from google's cache of my dynamic pages and by reports from forum members, the database was down for about an hour just before my inability to access to MySQL became known to me. This was probably when they made the move.

The lingering question I have is why are they moving the MySQL directories around? I don't mind that they're doing it, it was just unfortunate (for me) that they did this right before a weekend when whoever made the move probably was not around to fix any problems that might occur. It really didn't kill me... I only had a few things to put off, and if I really needed to get something done I could have used phpMyAdmin, I suppose.

Again, sorry I didn't update my own thread with the resolution.

A most reasonable explanation for moving anything to anywhere is a lack of space on a disk partition.

And dont worry about not updating the thread, I used to forget about my posts and probably missed some follow-ups too, but fortunately, I started to get e-mail notifications after the last board upgrade.

Yes, the email notifications sure are nice to have. I generally don't want to get notices about individual threads being updated, but it is nice to be informed when you get a PM again. I even got a happy birthday email from the board, too...

Shouldn't Jag be posting notices for updates like this that can potentially effect us even if problems aren't anticipated? I mean... just incase.
