    transfering my domain

I'm trying to transfer my domain from another host to JPC. The site is almost ready at http://nn.nn.nnn.nnn/~name the problem is that my registrar asks for nameserver and I see no way to include the IP addresses. The question is: Is it possible to propagate a site with the nameserver alone without IP addresses?

You may be a bit confused (or I am... happens all the time)... The registrar is probably looking for JAG's nameservers, usually one of two pairs:

    ns.nocdirect.com
    ns2.nocdirect.com

    or

    ns3.nocdirect.com
    ns4.nocdirect.com

I think right now JAG is having people point their domains to the second pair, i.e. ns3 and ns4 ( but either will work.)

When you tell JAG that you have a domain to host here, they will update their nameservers with your domain name and the IP address of your site's server. They may have already done this; there are ways you can tell if you have access to a nslookup program, set the server to be one of the above nameservers and then enter your domain... the result will tell you if JAG has you set up on this end.

    Good luck.

I've never used an DNS IP in my life, but whatever floats your boat!

    Thanks guys,

Well, I always used servernames and IP Addresses, however I learned that it works w/o IP's too.

I've used Dotster as my registrar, ever since they've been around, and they explicitly tell you NOT to include IP's, so I guess I've gotten used to NOT using IP's.

Before Dotster, I used Network Solutions, and they took care of all that stuff - them and the web host. What a bunch of BS that was!!!

Gawd! I forgot how much I hated that period on the Internet. You had to do everything through endless, confusing HTTP forms (if and when you could log into your account), or registered mail, and so forth. You couldn't do jack yourself. You had to supplicate yourself at the altar of the Internet gods! Miss one exacting detail and 'they' would deny moving your domain name to a different name server.

Those rotten pricks used to tie me up for weeks, every time I switched hosts. I eventually started telling the web host[s] to do it themselves, if they wanted my business.

LoL! That used to be a BIG selling point for me - if the web host would handle the transfer. And, I paid Network Solution 75 bones a whack for this crappy treatment !$%@#%&

    Network Solutions sucks a$$...

Okay, I'm getting pissed now! Thanks for rekindling those feelings! It's been a cathartic experience, I'm sure...

BAck in the old days that Vin speaks of *shudder--memories of similar bad memories...*, NetSol required you to provide name and address pairs for your nameservers. I remember whois listings back then including both, too, but that has changed. I suspect it has something to do with the fickleness of the IP system--even servers get moved around these days as hosts change providers, so relying on static IP's for DNS servers is no longer practical.

Most registrars these days, I suspect, are smart enough to automatically figure out the server name if you just use an IP. A registration database of known DNS servers is maintained in the central registry, so this information is easy for the registrar to get.
