    Question Ping?

    Our dns at work is usually pretty good, but once every two weeks or so it goes downhill and only resolves a handful of ip's. I decided to make a firefox extension which lets you right click on a link, and choose an option from the context menu to redirect you to a interim php page which pings the host you want to reach and finally directs you to the ip address. Only problem is, when I reach the interim page hosted on Jag, I can't ping (permission denied.) I realize I don't have a dedicated account or anything, but I don't think my rare pings would negatively affect the Jag server. Any ideas?

    Thanks!

    Define 'interim page'...

    Code:
    C:\>ping lenon.com -t

    Pinging lenon.com [69.73.147.61] with 32 bytes of data:

    Hello heeljeff,

    If you can provide a traceroute in a ticket when this happens it will help us locate any issues. It may be just a higher load at a peak time, but if that's the case we need to know which server needs the attention.

    Vin... it's $5.95 not $5.99.... why are you trying to make us look bad?... I kid of course!

    OK sorry let me try and clarify...
    I want a php page that takes the url as a variable. For example, if I go to www.mysite.com/pinger.php?u=someUrl
    I want the page to take someUrl, run a ping on it to get the IP address, then redirect me to http://IPAddress_of_someUrl
    Say my dns won't resolve www.news.com. I can right click an html link to www.news.com, select my firefox extension, which takes me to www.mysite.com/pinger.php?u=www.news.com, and seamlessly redirects me to 216.239.115.148

    Why use ping? PHP has a built in gethostbyname() function that, give a host name will return an ip.

    For example
    PHP Code:
    <?php

    echo(gethostbyname($_GET['u']));
    ?>
    --Jason
