Doesn't work with Canadian zip code

I have an oscommerce shop with a shipping module installed. If I set the zip code to a US one, it works fine. If I set it to a Canadian one, the code cannot connect to the server. This is a wokring site that was transferred from another server so it is not in the code. I've tried Jag support but they haven't responded to my messages for 6 hours. They do this fairly regularly so I won't hear from them about this until morning, if I'm lucky. The problem is that the site is not useable since it only has the one module. Does anyone have any idea what the problem is? Any suggestions as to what to try?

what is the EXACT wording of the error...

and which module are you using.

The original failure was with Canada Post using postal code V1Z3L5 but I enabled UPS and change it to 48187 and it fails the same way with the following message:

An error occured with the UPS shipping calculations.
Origin postal code must have five digits.
If you prefer to use UPS as your shipping method, please contact the store owner.
