    Subdomain Directory

    Hi =)

I recently decided I would be nice to my sister and set her up a blog on my site. I set her up on a subdomain, amber.x.com. That puts her files being in /home/x/public_html/amber. Would it be possible, through the magic of some htaccess or by asking support to get her files to be served out of /home/x/amber that way I don't see them in my files?

    TIA, Ryan

First, bad idea to disclose your account name assuming you haven't munged it.

Second, bad idea to get in habit of serving outside of public_html. I don't know of an easy way to do exactly what you want without doing some pretty tedious stuff a lá symlinking and/or mod_rewrites, and who needs that kind of grief?

Why not get your sis a domain name for her blog and turn the subdomain into a "real" domain via multihosting? There are some good threads in these forums to instruct you on how to accomplish that, so anything I add here would be redundant. If the forums have been resurrected from their servicing/categorizing, a search for "multihosting" should get you what you need.

I wish I understood why it's such a big deal about hiding the account name.. From what I've seen, that account name is based off the domain name, so anyone can see what my domain is and know my account name, no? If JaguarPC is keeping my server secure, I shouldn't have to worry about that. Plus, if someone really wants to take my site down, then that's a waste of their time, not mine. I have backups so it's not a big deal to me.

Anyhow, I don't want it to be a domain. It would be doing the same thing. I was a multi-hosted domain once and I know my files were in /home/hisusername/sparky.

Also, I wouldn't be serving out of public_html, it would be like making another one. I guess that's what I'm wanting.

    Maybe it's pointless though.

Your account name isn't always related to the domain name; certainly, to some extent, that will depend on the web host. I'd just as soon provide as little info as possible to prying eyes with too much time. Also, I want to help Jaguar out as much as possible to keep things secure since, if the site gets cracked either by my laziness or their incompetence (), my domain still suffers. As clients we are in a business relationship with shared responsibilities and obligations. While I pay exhorbitant prices to keep the gatekeepers extremely well compensated ( again), I don't feel right showing would-be miscreants where the locks are.

As far as making public_html2, I don't believe I've ever seen that done on Apache. Your account has one official directory at the top level and it serves from there. I don't know how Apache would handle split obligations as you describe.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

Each account has one Apache virtual server. Each such server has - AFAIK - never more than one webroot. Even if Apache would allow it, I am almost certain that WHM/cPanel would not has it included. So basically, what you are asking for comes down to buying an extra account, I'm afraid.

Whether you buy an actual domain name for it (multihosted) or not (subdomain) doesn't matter much. Though bad form, you could probably make a symlink to a place outside your public_html, but that still keeps her files just as visible to you: instead of her actual folder you'd see the symlink.

Why does it matter so much to you that you see the top of her folder structure in your public_html?

VPS would take care of this, I believe...

When I was playing around with it, if I remember correctly, when you setup a new user, it gives them their own HTML directory, just like when JagPC creates a new account on a shared server. That way, you can keep EVERYTHING totally seperate.

Yes, VPS would allow you to set up a new account for her with it being part of your space, but for what you describe wanting to do, it is probably overkill. Other than that, though, or buying a second account for her site, there isn't really much you can do I'm afraid.

Probably be cheaper to buy a domain name for $10.00 bucks a year and have it set up as a multihosted domain. You will only see one file in your root. Of course that's all you see now. If she is interested in building SE popularity the multihosted domain will be better. if at some point she want's to move to her own domain everthing is set up. With a subdomain she has to start from scratch.
