This is a discussion on Bandwidth, where is it going? in the Shared & Semi-Dedicated forum
Is there anyway to see what files are generating all the bandwidth? I'm up to about 20GB for the month and this seems a bit ...

    Bandwidth, where is it going?

Is there anyway to see what files are generating all the bandwidth? I'm up to about 20GB for the month and this seems a bit high for me. I have been working on the site a lot (a lot of refreshes and downloads/uploads) but the number seems a bit higher than usual. I just want to make sure the traffic is legit and no one is mooching somehow...

    *EDIT*
Ok... the control panel lists 23456.08 MB at this time. My awstats says 2.13 GB, analog stats says 12 GB, and webalizer says close to the same as control panel at around 23460217kB or 22910 MB. Which one of these is the most accurate. I just want to make sure I'm not letting someone abuse the bandwidth around here (which I dont think to be the case but I want to be sure).

Heh! I just had 'this' conversation with Ron.

The stats are correct -- all of them -- or close enough (analog looks askew however). Your confusion is probably caused by a basic misunderstanding about the relationship of bits, bytes, and bandwidth -- and compounded by trying to calculate it all in your head by moving the decimal place. It's a COMMON mistake, so don't feel bad...

    Use this calculator instead...

Um... sorry if that was too terse! I had to be somewhere in 5 minutes...

Anyway, assuming you have the GigaDeal X5 deal, 2.8 GB isn't bad. You have plenty of breathing room -- 72 GB...

EDIT: Now I'm confused! Do we get 75 Gb or 75GB?

Bah! Must be Gigabits, so you have 52 Gb left...

LoL! Better quit while I'm ahead!

    Have you looked at this?

It graphs your bandwidth usage since the beginning of the year...

Heh! Talking about bandwidth, imagine the poor guy that owns YourSite.com...

    It's GigaBytes.

(BTW, *I'M* not confused at all... I figured I'd let you wallow around in a dazed state rather than allow you to try to pull me down while trying to drag you up.)

It's been a long day, you know? And, it's not over yet...

Did you know there are 31 hours in a day and 52 weeks in a month?

    No, there aren't.

There are only 18 hours in a day and always less than 20 days in a month.

In Base 8, there'd always be exactly 30 hours in a day and nearly 40 days in a month.

Since we were on salary, the bosses always pushed for a changeover to Base 8 calendar accounting.

Of course, the strangest commercial system I ever worked on had a 6 bit byte and a 36 bit word.

Bytes were small, but words were bigger, and could store big amounts, like a little over 34 billion. But that was a big improvement over 32 bits which could only store a bit over 2 billion. If you dropped the sign bit and did everything bitwise, you could get 68 billion and 4 billion respectively.

But we're involved in the stock market, and amounts, even then, could easily get over billions. So you had to use floats.

Floats are wonderful. You can store really really REALLY big numbers in them, but you can't store $1 even. Can't be done. So there was lots and lots o' code to make real number arithmetic work for integer operations. FUN!

I've got the bits and bytes down just fine.. there is no confusion there. The issue I do have is that just about everything is reporting 20GB of usage which is extremely high and it's never been that high. I would like to see what files are being pulled to cause my bandwidth to go up so much.

About 1/3 of the way down of your Webalizer report there's a section about which files are consuming the majority of your bandwidth.

Mine is called: "Top 10 of 8115 Total URLs By KBytes"
