    Question Anyone Else Being Shadowed?

I got a kick out of this...

    http://host-tracker.com/website-uptime-stats/64507

Someone's been tracking my web site's uptime -- I assume a prospective client, or whatever. I noticed it in my HTTP refers and thought it was kinda funny, so I haven't block 'them'...

    99.97% Not bad, JagPC!

Anyway, is this happening to anyone else?

I haven't seen this yet, but looks to me like it could be an innovative way to create a lot of pages for AdSense.

    Yeah, no kidding!

If that's the case, this is the first time I've intentionally allowed someone to spam my site. Heh! I'm even thinking about putting a link to it on my homepage!

It's kind of nice for resellers actually and I have seen a few larger companies showing their stats with it.
There are other third party programs like this of course.

I don't think it uses any bandwidth and no other negative effects either. I've been using them for about a month and haven't even gotten any spam emails from them so not bad for free. Pretty customizable too.

What's wrong with running a free service to get some click traffic?
    Aren't you doin that Vin?

I don't think it's 'wrong', I just think it's odd. Wouldn't you think it's odd if something was tracking the uptime of your web site[s]?

I'm blocking their HTTP referers now, so if they're trying to spam my site, it ain't happening. I also setup an account, but they said my homepage is too big to monitor, even though 'they' (themselves) are monitoring it. I think this is odd too, don't you?

That tells me, it isn't 'someone' that's tracking my website, but rather 'something'...

Well you do have a lot of posts here on our forums. Maybe a potential client decided to sample performance from a known client of ours before making their decision. I can see no harm in tracking any site out there you want really.

That's what I thought at first too, Jag, but the thing is...

I went ahead and setup an account at host-tracker.com, and during the registration process, when I tried to enter my homepage, I got an error message saying it was too big to monitor.

I assume nobody else could be monitoring it either, ergo, it must be a host-tracker bot, or whatever, that initiated the tracking.

I also find it curious that the 'main' hosting node is in Houston, but 'they' don't give a URI...

    That's odd.

I just used the link you gave to do a quick check thing and it came back with the info just fine.

I then tryed to add you to my account and it came up with the size issue (max size allowed is 100k yours is 151k)

The trackers are provided by hosts for free which gets them a nice link position. There was just Houston and one other (NY?) a few weeks ago and now there's like 20.

Was your main page at or under 100k in the last month?

    Nope!

Heh! I have a very complicated website. Don't try to figure it out! If you check it with Goggle.com, 'they' say the homepage is 101k. Host-Tracker.com says it's 151k. If you check it with WebSiteOptimization.com, 'they' say it is 523k. I compress my pages, so the truth of the matter is kinda blurry -- 101k-523k depending on whom you believe.

I setup my account to monitor:

    http://www.lenon.com/modules.php?name=AvantGo

...instead of the homepage (which they won't allow). This is actually a 'mobile edition' of my homepage, for cell phones and such. I figured this will have the least impact, while I'm putzing around, especially considering I have it setup to check my site every minute. The URI for that is:

    http://host-tracker.com/website-uptime-statistics/77357

Consider this: When you click the uptime link in the original account:

    http://host-tracker.com/website-uptime-stats/64507

...you get the stats for the new account, which is yet another oddity...

    Thanks, I will!

I've always run a tracker in the past, but the last year or so, the one I used stopped working, and I never checked into it. So, I like the idea of being monitored. I just think it's weird when someone/something else instigated the monitoring, unsolicited.

As usual, I guess I'm the only one this is happening to...
