    changing permissions via Putty?

    Hey all,

I've installed a CMS, and the installation set ownership of files to my account, which is what I wanted. However, subsequent installations via the CMS are being owned by 'nobody', the default user. This wouldn't be a problem if everything could be handled through the CMS admin interface.

However, I'm trying to modify some elements, which means I have to install the file via the CMS panel, and then go back and tweak via FTP. The problem is the permissions won't let me do squat, and the ownership can't be changed apparently, except through support tickets.

I'd rather not open a dozen or so tickets every day - does anyone have a suggestion here? I can't afford to jump to a VPS just to do this development work, and installing the stuff by hand would require FTP for each batch of files, then editing the MySQL tables by hand. Certainly not how I'd like to spend my time.

You can use CPanel's file manager to change the permissions of the "nobody" files to be world writable. The go in, make your changes (and set the permissions back to someting more restrictive when done).

In this particular case it would probably be most convenient to write a tiny PHP script that makes this permissions change for you for the whole file structure of that CMS at once and a matching script to set restrictions back to normal.
