    Encrypting web pages

I have been trying to encrypt a few web pages and have used both WebLockPro and HTML Protector. I have asked several people in different locations to view my pages and let me know what they see. Everyone tells me they either can't get the page to load or they just see all black. I'm following the instructions carefully, have all the images, pages, etc. uploaded to my file manager. Does anyone have any suggestions, or experience with encrypting files? thanks for any advise. Patti

Why are you wanting to encrypt them anyway?

From my limited Knowlege of HTML Encryption, which I never really did because I honestly dont see the point, it requires Javascript, which is probally why your users are having a problem with it, Not all browsers support all javascript nor do they handel it the same way. Plus some user turn off Javascript for Security reasons.

Also you will get absolutly zero search engine listings because the Robots cant see javascript

I haven't used these apps but they require javascript-enabled browsers since that is what is used to decode the encrypted files by the requesting user-agent, i.e. browser. It's possible that default installations of individual user's browsers disable scripting languages by default. Apparently, Firefox, for example, is requiring an explicit enabling of *.js before it allows plug-in like activity to activate.

Do all of your visitors see black, or just some of them? Is the unencrypt javascript in the right place on the server and is the *.js readable (proper permissions) by "everyone"?

Nevermind. the_ancient covered this stuff already while I read up on these two products.

On top of that: what protection is it to offer you? You WANT your user to see those pages, right? You also WANT the majority of robots (i.e. search engine spiders) to see them, no? So all it helps against is the occasional address harvesting robot. -> Wouldn't it be better to encrypt only the e-mail addresses (and offer an e-mail form for those that can't see them)?

It is usually easier, IMHO, to build security around the content than to try and encrypt the page using JavaScript "voodoo." I haven't seen one of these javascript things in a while, and I'm actually surprised they're still out there.

The biggest problem with using JS to mask the content of the page, as these do, is that they won't work with non-JS browsers--some users turn it off, others--such as the visually impaired--use special browsers and don't have the option. Although that may not be a big issue for you, Target is currently being sued for having a site that isn't accessible and, so these types of issues are starting to come to light.

Maybe if you elaborated on what you are trying to protect we could offer better suggestions.
