Thumbs down Servers been slow and not reliable

Hello, I have had a vps account on miranda server and to be honest I havent been able to use it. The server takes ages to load into cpanel / whm , to which I know its not my internet connection as Im also using vps servers with other hosts. Not only this but exim goes down all the time, message forwarding never happens despite the dns been correct.

When I signed up for the service I requested cpanel, they gave me plesk. They then changed it but didnt give me the ips or install fantastico, machine has been re-installed about 3 times!

Im just really sick of the service, the response time to support tickets is good though , I just dont feel Im getting what I pay for and this is the first time with this company.

I have a vps account on Apollo and have the same problem with exim and slow cpanel/whm. Have beeen told by support that there was a node problem they were fixing a few days ago but problem still persists
I don't know what your problem is, but I'll bet it's hard to pronounce..

    Reporting A Slow Server

What's the best way to monitor and measure a server's response time from a browser?

I've been experiencing slow response times over the last few weeks on my web site (griffin machine) and opened a ticket today to see what can be done. I got what seemed like a canned "...we're aware of it and working on it..." response. However, it does seem to be faster at the moment, so I'm not getting too excited, yet. I've been on Jag for several years and really haven't had much trouble at all until this recent slow down.

What I'd like to be able to do is quantify my experience when reporting a problem, rather than simply saying, "it's slow". Any thoughts on the best way to do this?

    Thanks,
    Mike

    mikedj,

I always monitor some of my websites from outside connections. (guess i have the luck to have multiple servers around the world who can do this for me).

I try to do this with a functional check. Which means, i load a page from my website, if using PHP and MySQL i would most likely try to use those pages for my tests. Also i set it to warn me if the times to load getting above an acceptable level.

Is this the perfect way ? well no, i do not yet have correlation between the different servers, which would be a nice to have for me, so i am not depending on one network link which might be slow. And i can think of tons of other monitoring techniques.

you can get a simple WWW checker and Email checker from:
    http://checkwebsite.org

Hope this helps you finding the problem, an good idea is to maybe create a script which also tries this from the server it self, and when it reaches a timeout automaticly makes a 'ps' snapshot and some other tests to find what is bothering you..

Please note that monitoring a website sounds simple, but you have to know what you are doing in order to retrieve data where you can do something with.

    Kindest regards,
    Patrick

Thanks for the reply. I did figure out that it is not necessarily a simple procedure since there are many variables at play. I was just looking for some guidance on some possible methods. I will give your suggestions a try.

    Thanks,
    Mike
