    Or badpage.html..

That way you'll make sure none of your users ever gets to see it. You see, most visitors are annoyed by getting a splash page instead of the website they came for. No self-respecting website has one anymore.

If I was you, I'd look into installing a Content Management Sysytem on your site. I've been doing this web stuff a long time, and use PHP-Nuke. There is no dishonor in doing things this way...

To give you an idea of what I'm talking about:

This is my production web site (about 3 years work involved): http://www.lenon.com/

Here's what a 'canned version' looks like (about 1 hour involved): http://pilot.lenon.com/
The only thing I added was Google Adsense in the header, as an experiment.

And, here are some other CMSs I've installed here, just for the hell of it -- mostly to help ppl in these threads. Took an hour or less (each) to install...

    e107: http://e107.lenon.com/

    Joomla: http://joomla.lenon.com/

Bottomline: As you can see, it's easy to have a good looking web site up n' running in no time, using CMS software.

I assumed this person is a newbie, and just wanted to get a site going ASAP.

If that isn't the case, and they are simple asking about putting up an 'under construction' page, or whatever, follow Sara's advice.

If they are talking about making a 'splash page' -- don't do it! Splash pages are deadly, as Gwaihir hinted at...
