    FTP speed erratic?

    Hi, I just joined Jag PC using the SDX plan, and I'm having erratic FTP speeds, much slower than even the bargain-basement plan I was on before. Are there ups and downs to FTP speed depending on time of day?

    My upload speed right now is about 1 MB per minute - that's pretty bad imo when it takes 15 minutes to upload one 15 MB file. At my old host that was 3 minutes, max.

    Will I get better performance if I upload in the middle of the night? And is there some kind of problem with the server or some kind of tweaking I can do to get better FTP speeds? Using WS_FTP on a cable connection by the way. I didn't even get FTP speeds this erratic on my oversellling bargain basement plan with my last host.

    What FTP server software are they using on the SDX plans? PureFTPd?

    To be quite honest I don't think it's their ftp servers. I'm not 100% sure what is going on but I am pretty certain that JaguarPC isn't at fault here. I have come to a point that I think that either Noc Direct or Cyrus One is at fault here. When doing pings from a couple of hosts I would get dropped packets when pinging to ips 69.7.175.37, 69.7.175.17, and 69.7.175.19 which are all owned by Cyrus One so I am more likely to think it is them. All three ips are in Houston, TX. I was getting anywhere between 6% and 20% packet loss. On outgoing connections from my VPS I was getting really jumpy speeds downloading from sites like php.net, Sourceforge (any of their mirrors), and simplemachines.org just to name a few. They would range anywhere between 500 bytes/sec and 1 MB/sec but it was usually around 30 K/sec and still jumpy. I am personally thinking about giving the network admins a call and seeing if they can look into it but it just seems odd. I have yet to submit a ticket in on this but if it isn't JaguarPC then I'm not 100% sure what can be done on this.

    How about posting some proof... er, traceroutes here?

    I find 20% packet loss a little hard to, um, fathom...

    Yes, I would judge 'jumpy' to be THE key word... or maybe 'schizo grosso'...

    nocdirect.com is just a generic name that JPC uses for their servers, mainly to hide the JPC name from resold accounts (so that reseller's client's won't (easily) discover that JPC is really hosting thier sites. If you do a whois lookup on nocdirec.com you'll see it is registered to JPC.

    CyrusOne owns the building and datacenter where JPC's Houston operations are housed.

    Thanks for clearing that up. And another contributing factor I forgot to mention is that the ping times jump really high sometimes. Even from the VPS to one of the previously mentioned ips. It would go from .5ms up to 200ms on spikes. Even still I didn't pick out those ips as being at fault initially. It took some work. Also the 20% packet loss may of been a rarity. It might of also been on one of the smaller ping runs (30 pings vs. 100 pings).

    The packet loss didn't reappear when I did the pings just now but here is what I came up with. I pinged 69.7.175.17 and 69.7.175.19.

    Note the really high jumps on 69.7.175.19. This was one host where I was getting the packet loss. Noting that I didn't get it this time and maybe someone fixed it but the high pings are there and worse than they were before. Ping times actually can impact it higher than you might think and when they are jumpy can indicate a bad point in the network. I couldn't ping 69.7.175.37 from this host or even from my house.
