    Anyone having upload speed issues?

Using WinSCP I am only able to get about 20KBytes upload speed to my Houston server.

Using FTP I get about double that.

Anyone else getting really slow upload speeds lately? Have you tried lately?

This has been happening for a while now (maybe a couple of weeks) and I'm getting complaints that my photo gallery is really slow uploading too, and that's php based.

I tried uploading a 700meg file via FTP and it arrived smaller (corrupted, of course) and it was about twice as fast, taking "only" about 4 hours.

Reloading backups after a crash would take a month at this rate. lol

So give it a try and see what you see!

    Thanks in advance.

I've been doing a lot of uploads lately and it has been slooooow. When I had the biggest uploads I opted to start them at night before going to bed and hopefully they'd be done in the morning.

If you havent already please open a ticket with traceroutes to your server so we can gather the info and see if we can find the problem.

    I did.

I was first told it was a temporary issue. So I spent 2 days documenting the issue, running ftps and WinSCP uploads and downloads to my JAG server and to another server, and running FTPs from my home machine to and from JAG as well as to and from JAG from another server, and gathering data, and producing screen shots.

Now I'm told it was a known issue for many months. It's an upstream issue, nothing is wrong inside the datacenter and there's nothing that can be done about it, except move my account away from Houston to Atlanta.

I have to imagine that every machine at C.O. is having the same problem, perhaps "we" could get them to move to another provider. Aren't there supposed to be redundant paths into the datacenter? Can't you just cut the slow fiber?

Wouldn't you rather let me yell and scream at whoever it is upstream from you that is the problem?

Hmmm, I wondered why I've been getting slow loading times (I'm looking at a few tabs of timeouts right now).

Not just my servers (Genesis at times, right now it's Riven), but also Jag's (main site, support tickets, this forum). I though it might be on my end, except it's been on and off for a few days now. Then I saw this thread.

I'd have opened a ticket, but it seems sporadic - though frequent...

    Interesting!

Initially, I didn't feel like posting in this thread, but now that you've added that comment...

I've had this problem, almost daily, ever since I've been here (3+ years). Sometimes I upload at 8Kbps, sometimes full tilt.

For instance, I just ran these tests...

50MB tar file, late afternoon -- HTTP down, SSH up...

    Download:
    Upload:

    That's 5 Mbps up/down -- (almost) full bandwidth for this DS3 connection.

Put another way, your 700MB upload would take about 19 minutes on this connection, Ron, at this time of day -- not 4-8 hours!

I've noticed over the years, there doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to it, except, it seems to be worse when the auto-backup routines kick in. Because of this, I always assumed it had something to do with the way their internal networking is setup.

    Anyway, that's my best guess!

BTW, I'm housed in Houston too, on a lowly shared account...

    Heh! You know what?

I'd love to see a shared 'Ranger Danger Dan' server here -- no auto-backups, no Jailshell, no PHP-CGI -- just balls to the wall! I'll bet that thing would fly!

    See my comments above...

This is probably the WORST possible time to upload files!

It's supposedly a location dependent network issue. (in other words, my connection coming in to Houston from the east is going a certain path, which you coming in from the west aren't taking)

My uploads used to fly. I went to FiberOptic specifically because the best upload that cable would sell me was 256Kbps. Now I can't upload faster than about 125-256Kbps.

When I make a sizeable upload, which isn't often, I want it to happen quickly.
I pay an extra $15 a month for the privilege of uploading at 2MBps

I don't think that JAG has any understanding of how annoyed I am about this. First that it has been a known problem "for many months" and that they can't do anything about it. How about swapping out their backbone? Secondly that I spent a couple of days documenting the issue even though they already knew all about it. Third, one person in my community had been complaining about slow uploads for a long while, and I'd been poo-pooing it without testing it for myself.

Oops, realized that this thread is about uploads not speed in general. (It was late at night my time when I posted.) Still, valid for me in both directions...

LoL! Guess you didn't see my thread about Level 3, or you didn't care to believe me. That's fine! No skin off my nose...

I know it's pretty hard to keep up with me! Ppl have a hard time dealing with truth...

Truth is scary, and lies are comforting! And, the bigger the lie, the more comfortable you ppl feel. That's how Hitler got into power -- big lies and big comfort. In your heart, you know I'm right!

I can play that game, if you like...

In the meantime, the fact of the matter is, Level 3 sucks, but JagPC, et al, hasn't come to that realization yet. You see, 'they' have the same failings as the rest of you 'sh!t ppl'. Lies are better than truth!

For anybody that's still with me, when I pull the plug, you'll know it's time to leave JagPC! However, I'm still here, and I'm still being a cheerleader for them, aren't I?

I'm sorry, I guess, that you're working under a false perception, that uploading in the middle of the night is going to get you anywhere, but that's when the auto-backups kick in, by design. If you aren't smart enough to figure that out on your own, so be it. And, if you don't want to listen to me, do so at your own peril.

Hahahaha! See why I didn't want to post in this thread?

The silence in here is deafening...

BTW, my problem seems to be with above.net. Are they part of level3?

    Who's to say? Yes, probably...

All this BS started last fall, when Level 3 tried to get more money out of Cogent. Cogent was selling bandwidth to pornographers for practically nothing, and sending it through Level 3's network, through some sort of mutual pact. To the fair to Level 3, Cogent was taking advantage of the situation, i.e. through a loophole in the agreement. Level 3 finally told them to pay up, or they were going to shut them off. Cogent didn't pay, and Level 3 shut 'em off... and about half the east coast... Congress even got involved in this! Level 3 is HUGE, so yes, they probably do affect above.net (and JagPC) more than you think.

The latest problems involve Level 3's buyout (e.g. taking out) of WilTel -- both of which JagPC uses. So, you ppl in the East are getting a double-whammy!

    Gotta run! BBL...

Hmm. I hadn't really noticed since most of my stuff is pretty small. I tried it and, by jove, you're right. And I'm pretty close to the servers.
    Code:
Begin upload of binary [1.21 MB (1,277,852 bytes)]
    E:\>time
    The current time is: 15:42:05.66
End upload of binary [1.21 MB (1,277,852 bytes)]

So, it took about 60s to upload ~1.21 MB, which is about the same rate as you experienced. Seems a bit slow to me, too. I'm not on optic but am on decent broadband.

Yup, 1MB per minute is f&*#$& disgusting.

Maybe this accounts for why it seems that THIS forum is pitifully slow, too. Maybe there's a ton of net latency with a shipload of back and forth between my browser and the Vb server.

    [removed excessively derogatory remark ....]
