    Upgrade to Semi-dedicated is scary

    Hi:

Has anyone else upgraded from Longhorn to Semi-dedicated? I just did so last night and now I can't access my site.

It has been over seven hours and still all I'm getting is "There is no website configured at this address."

They said it would take time for the DNS to propagate. Why does the DNS have to propagate? I haven't changed anything at my registrar. I haven't changed hosts. All I did was upgrade my account.

I'm no expert on this stuff, and my website is a business site, so I'm losing money and can't help but worry.

The propagation time is necessary because your site is moving to a new server so the IP address of your site has to be changed to the new server's IP. No changes are necessary at your registrar because the actual DNS servers aren't changing, just the records on those servers, which are in JPC's control.

Changes to records on the same DNS server usually result in shorter propagation times than when you actually change the DNS servers, generally on the magnitude of hours instead of days. It is possible that your ISP's servers haven't picked up the change yet. If you post a link to your site, I could try to connect to it through my ISP (who's servers are probably "clean") to see if there is a problem. It is also possible that someone at JPC forgot a setting somewhere, so testing through another source will let you know if the issue is on your end or JPC's.

use the IP address of the new server, it's likely you're seeing the old server

Hmm.. they don't put a few rewrite rules in the old server's config to take care of that for those few days?
