I have 2 accounts on 2 different servers.
My sites on chameleon server have monthly troubles the other server is OK, but kinda slow.
I have been doing this Internet thing for a long time (and multi-line dial-up BBS before that) so, it's pretty hard to fool me, when it comes to these things. And, I'm pleased to tell you that I've never caught these guys in a lie, in the 3+ years I've been here.
Speaking of which, I don't have any problem switching web hosts. I used to do it once or twice a year, but JaguarPC is a very dynamic place. Nothing stands still here for long! Whenever I start getting bored with this place, they come up with something new -- a new feature -- a new plan -- new security features -- suspend my site for using too many resources, et cetera. So, if you like change, this place is for you! They're always riding the 'Jagged Edge' -- a very progressive place, they are...
Speed/bandwidth: They're about the same as most GOOD web hosts. Some days it's hot -- some days it's not, but if you know anything about the web, you know that's because one of your neighbors on the server is testing a new script, and it's stuck in a loop, or one of their carriers has a bad edge router, whatever. It isn't JaguarPC's fault 99.9% of the time. That's how they can offer a 99.9% guarantee, you know?
Now for the biggie!![]()
The support and staff at JagPC rocks!!! In all my years of doing this, I've never seen anything like it! In that respect, JaguarPC is unique -- at least in my experience, here and elsewhere. That alone is worth the price of admission, IMHO...
Hrm...
That's about all I can think of right now, but I just woke up, and I'm not 'cranked' yet. Give me about 14 hours... If I think of more, I'll BBL!![]()

Boy. You sure aren't cranked. How could you overlook the charming input and atmosphere of the forum? Can I get an "Amen"?Originally Posted by Vin DSL

Wow, I'm impressed by your replies. Does anyone have a testlink for me to test my download speed from SEA?![]()
I also got 2 accounts on 2 different servers, and haven't had any issues - excepts that the stats stopped to update ones - since I came here 2002 or so.
[edit] oh and lurking about on the forums is great.

- load speed - Many variables to consider when evaluating this depending on both server, client, and code. My static pages load quickly. My dynamic content is actually processed faster now than it was a year ago. It could be improved coding, less populated servers, better hardware, or even luck. At any rate, for a shared plan, it's quite consistently good but certainly less than a semi-dedicated plan.
- bw - Fine. Ping times good on a relatively short route to the servers. That, of course, would depend on where your customers reside. As far as bursting (again, considering your client network settings will effect perceived performance) it is just fine. Mine are not terribly high volume sites, so I never exceed the caps. Were I too, I can bump it up on an ad hoc need.
- support - Very good. Responsive but not perfect... but who could claim that? Jaguar will go out of its way to address all of your concerns. Staff support varies but escalation of unresolved issues is good. Every issue I've had has been resolved. Time (including email tag) has ranged from less than 30 seconds(!) to about a day. Another host I use usually requires at least a day to even look at an issue, much less resolve it. Hands down, these guys have an amazing bargain with support for the price.
I highly recommend the shared hosting plan. Great value, reasonably tweakable servers, personal space that really seems like your own (no heavy handed control from the admins), good performance, and earnest staff.
(Yo Vin.... what BBS software did you run? I had a WWIV BBS back yonder in the eighties had four phone lines and received 150 - 250 calls a DAY! A good amount of ld ones too as I was one of 80 support boards for WWIV. I keep every file and mod there was available in the downloads area.and multi-line dial-up BBS before that)
Had some very popular Space Dynasty and Trade Wars games going. Space Dynasty - ha I remember I was unbeatable haha. Being local to the BBS had something to do with it though!
I remember my first CD Drive I bought so that I could put a Night Owl shareware cd online. It was a 1x Tandy and it cost me $200.00!
Wildcat! BBS here...
Heh! Speaking of Trade Wars, we were WAY ahead of our time. We took Wildcat! apart and figured out how make it run as a door, just like TW. So, we had different Wildcat! nodes running as doors inside the main node!![]()
There at the last, I was running 15 Night Owl (and a couple of other) CD's -- 3x4 NEC Juke changers, and 3 prioritary singles. I was using every letter in the alphabet, C-Z for the drives and partitions.
You wanna know the funny thing... nothing has really changed, in all those years -- the basics, that is. Here it is, 2006, and Wildcat! had the same functionality as PHP-Nuke.
It's like they say... the more things change, the more they stay the same.
LoL! Remember running maintenance at midnight. It would kick everyone off the board[s], so Trade Wars could move stuff around on them -- or, my favorite, Legend of The Red Dragon -- and so forth, and so on... Hahahaha! Those were the days, huh?

Yes Vin I really enjoyed those days - MUCH! That midnight maintenance procedure really taught me some batch file tricks.
We were able to run differently modded versions of WWIV as a door also. John Daley's Barren Realms Elite was my favorite game. Hey give LORD a play: http://lord.nuklear.org/
Funny thing is when I write password hints for today they are sometimes based on my old BBS days... (Same as doorway - same as //dos - etc)
You can still telnet into some WWIV bbs's via the net today.
To get back to the original post. I think Jag is an excellent host. I have been here a long time. I have sites on three servers.
There have been some bad times, but the good far outweighs the bad IMHO.
You can only expect so much on a shared server.

Yeah, that's another funny thing...
I was a late arrival to the web. I didn't really care much for the Internet, at first, so I kept putting it off. However, around '96 I had to start learning HTML (for Wildcat!). Why? Because Jimmy H. at Mustang Software had wisely decided it was the way of the future, and wanted to make Wildcat! web-compatible.
Anyway, that's when I got caught up with the whole web-thing, forget Wildcat! BBS, and roll my own...
To make a long story short, I can put my Wildcat! BBS on the web tomorrow, if I wanted to. It's still sitting right there, in the basement. Might have to kick the drives, to get them to spin up, but...
Ppl have contacted me, over the years, asking me to do this for nostalgia sake. LoL! A lot of those kids are in college now... or have kids of their own... and wanna show their friends and families how it used to be in the old days.
Maybe I'll do that some day, if I get bored...![]()

Get bored - I would like to see it. I have my bbs still sitting in the cellar too! I had it running at night on my fax line at the office just up till a few years ago when the power supply finally died. Had two users - me and my buddy AMpro - playing Space Dynasty right up till the end! I won! haha
Yes for the old days, but then again, if we really take a close look - I'll take todays technology!
Okay hijacked this thread enough aye?I'm off to Rochester to referee in a football tourney this weekend. Last year I played quarterback in the tourney and led our team to third place - but being the oldest guy on the field at age 46 and missing two weeks of work after it I decided to join the darkside!
"Sunny" Rochester welcomes you, Frank.
