I don't think there are any hard limits. It all depends on the overall resources available on the server, the demand on the server at the time that your site peaks, and other factors like that. If your site spikes to, lets say 50% of the available CPU at 2:00 AM server time and no one else is using any resources on the server at the time then the spike probably won't be noticed. If it does it at 2:00 PM and the server has 500 other users connected to it at the same time then JPC might say something.

I guess that explains some of the downtime on one of the servers I am on.
