Are this service take lot of resources

I have enabled antivirus & spamd from cPanel. I got several time cpsrvd service failed. Support guys told me, antivirus & spamd take a lot of resources. I can't except that. I ask them to upgrade my account. I'm still waiting.

Note that account upgrades are done by our billing department which is only opened during business hours. They will get back to you shortly.

Do clamav and spamassassin really take that much resources for other services to fail on a 256MB vps? (assuming it's a 256MB vps)

It is possible to run them both in a starter (256mb) VPS without a problem, but it really depends on how much email your VPS has to handle. If your VPS gets a lot of incoming email messages and it has to scan for spam and on top of that also for virusses, that will indeed use quite a bit of RAM (and CPU).

In my personal experience I would recommend not to use server-side virus scanning. This is just my personal opinion, but I just don't see the point of scanning for virusses on the server end, since the email users could simply scan for virusses on the client end. By doing so you basically move the load that would otherwise be put on your VPS to your clients, which saves you a lot of valuable resources.
