Open source equevilent to MS Exchange server

    Hi everyone,

I am looking for an open source alternative to Exchange Server and have been shown a package called Zimbra and quite frankly im blown away at what it does .

What I want to know is would Zimbra work on one of the VPS's or would there be no point in trying.

    TIA
    Paul

    Hi Paul,

I've just checked the requirements and from what I can tell it should work just fine on a VPS. The only concern might be that the documentation states that it requires 1GB ram but I think that the RAM usage will depend on how much you actually use the mailserver, but this also depends on how the application works.

I also have to add that we have not tested this software so I cannot guarantee it will work, but from what I can tell it should work just fine. The only concern might be the amount of ram it needs but if you need additional ram you could just upgrade the VPS.

One question Paul: how busy do you think this application would be? Usually, things like exchange server are hosted on a dedicated machines, not just because of RAM but because of CPU power as well. Kinda like Active Directory.

    Hi Milovan,

At present we have about 200 users that connect to our exchange server but I am looking for a solution that is not only cheaper for us but is also in a secure location.

Of course if I did get a copy of Zimbra and install it on to one of the VPS's you offer that would be the only thing that would be running on the VPS with the rest of our site on its own VPS.

Also I guess that the best place for Zimbra with 200 users to run would be on its own fully dedicated server and not a VPS.

I am not looking to get a VPS and Zimbra today. I am just scouting around for cheaper solutions to Exchange Server and Zimbra seems so much better for a lower TCO and as a bonus its open source.
