Lightbulb DEHE making backups for users?

Although I'm aware of DEHE's separate backup FTP service they offer, I'm wondering how feasible it would be for you to just automatically backup users' VPS's in case of data loss.

My idea is that you could do it on a nightly basis, perhaps having 3 server sites around the world in, say, the US, Europe and Australia. Nightly, you would perform a bit-by-bit backup of each VPS machine, similar to a RAID mirror, but scheduled. This would be a major selling point, and I for one would probably be prepared to pay extra for that kind of reliability.

I'm not sure how extensive your current backup procedures are, could someone from DEHE enlighten on this? Also I'm not sure how thin (or otherwise) your profit margins are and whether this kind of backup would be feasible. But I have to say it would be a heck of a lot easier than mucking around trying to perform backups of my data myself. I'd like just to know that the VPS i'm updating has its data regularly mirrored.

    Hi Jez,

This is something that we are already doing, we create backups of all VPS's on separate servers. However, these backups are only used in case of a serious problem on our end, and are also not available for usage by the customer.

    Andre,

For a fee could the client ask you to restore their VPS from your backups?

You say they're not available for usage by a customer, I guess you mean we can't "roll back" if we screw up. That's fine; the point I was more getting at is that it'd be nice to know that what was on our servers was actually pretty safe, so that as long as we take care of the data on there, we don't need to constantly worry about backing up gigabytes of data on a regular basis - it's much easier for DEHE to do that anyway as the servers are on your end.
